The Republican People's Party (Turkish: Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi, often called CHP) is the oldest political party in Turkey. A political party is a group of people who share similar ideas about how a country should be run.
The CHP believes in ideas like social democracy and Kemalism. Social democracy means they want a fair society where the government helps people. Kemalism is based on the ideas of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who founded modern Turkey.
Today, the CHP is the second largest party in the Turkish Parliament. The Parliament is where laws are made. The CHP has 132 out of 550 seats. This makes them the Main Opposition party in Turkey. This means they are the biggest group that is not part of the government.
The party was founded by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Its current leader is Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu.
The CHP started as a group of Turkish nationalists. They formed a resistance group on September 7, 1919. This group worked against the invasion of Turkey. On September 9, 1923, this group officially became the Republican People's Party.
