Fahri Sabit Korutürk (born August 3, 1903 – died October 12, 1987) was an important Turkish leader. He was an admiral in the navy, a diplomat (someone who represents their country in other nations), and a politician. He served as the 6th President of Turkey from 1973 to 1980. Before becoming president, he was the commander of the Turkish Naval Forces from 1957 to 1960. He was also a member of the Turkish Senate.
Contents
Fahri Korutürk was born in Istanbul, a big city in Turkey. His birthplace was on a small street between the famous Topkapı Palace and Hagia Sophia. He started his journey in the navy at the cadet school in 1916. He graduated in 1923 and then from the Turkish Naval Academy in 1933.
In 1934, he met Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who was the first President of Turkey. After this meeting, he was given the surname "Korutürk," which means "Protector of Turks." He worked on different types of warships, including cruisers and submarines. He also traveled to other countries as a naval attaché. This means he was a military expert working at Turkish embassies in places like Rome, Berlin, and Stockholm. In 1936, he helped as a military advisor during the Montreux Convention Regarding the Regime of the Turkish Straits. This was an important meeting about controlling the waterways in Turkey. He became a rear admiral in 1950 and later became a full admiral.
Diplomatic Roles
After he retired from leading the Turkish Navy in 1960, Fahri Korutürk started a new career as a diplomat. The Head of State, Cemal Gürsel, appointed him as Turkey's ambassador to the Soviet Union. He served in this role from 1960 to 1964. Later, he became the ambassador to Spain from 1964 to 1965.
Becoming President
In 1968, President Cevdet Sunay chose Fahri Korutürk to be a member of the Turkish Senate. This was another important step in his political career. On April 6, 1973, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (which is like Turkey's parliament) elected him as the 6th President of Turkey.
During his time as president, a big event happened: the Turkish Invasion of Cyprus. This happened after the leader of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios III, was removed from power by Greek officers. President Korutürk led Turkey during this challenging period.
After the Presidency
Fahri Korutürk served his full seven-year term as president, ending on April 6, 1980. Kenan Evren, a military leader, suggested that Korutürk should stay in office for another term. He thought Korutürk was respected by both the military and politicians. However, President Korutürk refused this offer. He said it would not follow the country's laws (unconstitutional). After his presidency, he became a senator again. He served until a military takeover happened in 1980.
Personal Life
Fahri Korutürk married Emel Korutürk in 1944. They had three children together: two sons and one daughter. He passed away in Moda, Istanbul, and was buried in the Turkish State Cemetery in Ankara.
One of his sons, Osman Korutürk, also became a diplomat. In 1996, he was appointed as Turkey's ambassador to Tehran. While he was there, the Iranian government gave him some documents about his father. These documents showed that during his time as ambassador to the Soviet Union, Fahri Korutürk was the only ambassador who exchanged his paychecks through the official state bank, Gosbank. Other ambassadors sometimes used unofficial ways to exchange money.
