Mahmut Sadi Irmak (born May 15, 1904 – died November 11, 1990) was an important Turkish figure. He was a scientist who studied the human body (called a physiologist). He was also a politician and even served as the Prime Minister of Turkey.
Early Life and Education
Sadi Irmak was born in 1904 in a town called Seydişehir in Konya, which was part of the Ottoman Empire back then. After finishing college in Konya, he first became a biology teacher. However, he soon decided to study law at Istanbul University.
In 1925, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey, wanted to send 50 talented students abroad. He wanted them to get a great education. Sadi Irmak was chosen after taking a special test. He went to Germany on a scholarship from the government. There, he studied biology and medicine. He finished his medical degree from the University of Berlin in 1929. After his studies, he worked as an assistant doctor in hospitals in Germany.
Return to Turkey and Academic Career
After his time in Germany, Sadi Irmak came back to Turkey. He worked as a government doctor and also taught biology. In 1932, he started teaching at the School of Medicine at Istanbul University. By 1939, he became a full professor, teaching about how the human body works.
Political Journey
Sadi Irmak started his political career in 1943. He became a representative for Konya in the Turkish parliament. From 1945 to 1946, he served as the Minister of Labor. This was a new role in the Turkish government at the time.
In 1950, he returned to teaching. He lectured in Munich, Germany, and then back in Istanbul. Later, in 1974, he became a member of the Senate. That same year, the President of Turkey, Fahri Korutürk, asked Sadi Irmak to form a new government. He became the Prime Minister on November 17, 1974. His government was a temporary one and lasted for 124 days. He resigned on March 31, 1975, after losing a vote in parliament.
After a military event in 1980, he was chosen to be part of the Consultative Assembly. He served as its speaker from October 1981 to December 1983.
Sadi Irmak passed away on November 11, 1990, in Istanbul. He was buried in the Aşiyan Asri Cemetery. He had a wife and two children. His daughter, Professor Yakut Irmak Özden, continues to work in education at Istanbul University.
