Mehmet Recep Peker (born February 5, 1889 – died April 1, 1950) was an important Turkish military officer and politician. He held many different government jobs. He even became the Prime Minister of Turkey, which is like the head of the government. He was known for wanting to modernize Turkey.

Early Life and Military Career
Recep Peker was born in Istanbul on February 5, 1889. His father, Mustafa, came from the Dagestan region. This area is in the Caucasus mountains.
Education and Training
Recep Peker went to Koca Mustafa Pasha Primary School. Then he attended Military Middle School. After that, he studied at the Kuleli Military High School. He later went to the Military College. In 1907, he finished the academy as a lieutenant. He then became a staff officer.
Military Service
Recep Peker fought in several wars. He was part of battles in Yemen and Libya. He also served in the Balkan Wars. During World War I, he fought in Thrace and the Caucasus. In 1911, he joined the Staff College. He graduated in 1919 as the top student in his class.
In late 1919, he taught military history. He worked at the Turkish Military Academy. On February 4, 1920, he joined the Turkish War of Independence. He served as a squadron leader in Anatolia.
Political Career
Recep Peker became a key figure in Turkish politics. He helped shape the new Turkish Republic.
Early Political Roles
On April 23, 1920, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey opened. This was Turkey's parliament. Recep Peker was made its secretary general. He held this important job for over three years.
While serving as secretary general, he also worked for the General Staff. He was the chief of the Second Branch Office. In July 1923, he was elected to parliament again. He represented the city of Kütahya.
Ministerial Positions
Recep Peker held many different minister roles:
- He was the Minister of Finance from March to November 1924.
- He also served as Minister of Interior.
- He was appointed Minister of National Defence in March 1926.
- In 1927, he became the Minister of Public Works.
In 1928, he was chosen as the spokesman for the Republican People's Party (CHP). He also became the party's secretary general.
Education and Modernization
Recep Peker strongly believed in modernizing Turkey. He started a program to teach "History of the Revolution" in schools. This taught students about Turkey's new government.
From 1933 to 1934, he taught about Republican Ideology. He gave these "revolution lessons" at universities. He even wrote a book about his ideas. He supported big changes for Turkey. He believed women should have more freedom. He also supported changing the Arabic alphabet to a Latin-based alphabet. This change made it easier for people to read and write.
Prime Minister of Turkey
In August 1942, Recep Peker became the Minister of Interior. He served in this role for nine months.
On August 7, 1946, he became the Prime Minister of Turkey. This was a time when Turkey was moving towards having many political parties. However, Peker believed in a strong government. He thought one main party should guide the country's progress. He served as prime minister until September 7, 1947. He retired from politics in 1948.
Recep Peker passed away on April 2, 1950. He was buried in the Edirnekapı Martyr's Cemetery in Istanbul.
