Ali Fethi Okyar was an important Turkish leader. He was born in 1880 and passed away in 1943. He worked as a diplomat, a military officer, and a politician. He even served as the second Prime Minister of Turkey and the second Speaker of the Turkish Parliament, right after Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

Early Life and Education

Fethi Okyar was born in 1880 in a town called Prilep. This town was part of the Ottoman Empire, which is now North Macedonia. He went to a military high school in Monastir. There, he became good friends with Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who would later become the first President of Turkey. Fethi Okyar even helped Atatürk learn French!

Political Career

Joining the Committee of Union and Progress

In 1913, Fethi Okyar joined a political group called the Committee of Union and Progress. He became the secretary general of this group. This was an important step in his political journey.

Becoming Prime Minister

In 1924, Fethi Okyar became the Prime Minister of Turkey. He took over from İsmet İnönü. However, his time as Prime Minister was short. In March 1925, he was replaced by İnönü again. This happened because a stronger approach was needed to deal with a challenge known as the Sheikh Said rebellion.

Diplomat and Opposition Leader

After being Prime Minister, Fethi Okyar became the Turkish ambassador to France. He lived in Paris for a while. In 1930, he was allowed to start a new political party. This party was called the Liberal Republican Party. It was one of the first opposition parties in Turkey.

However, the government noticed that some people who supported the party had extreme views. Because of this, the party was declared illegal and closed down. This was similar to what happened to another party, the Progressive Republican Party, a few years earlier.

Later Roles

Later in his career, Fethi Okyar continued to serve his country. He was the Minister of Justice from 1939 to 1941. He played many important roles in the early years of the Turkish Republic.
