Key Events of 1567
Political Changes in the Netherlands
In 1567, the Duke of Alva arrived in the Netherlands. He brought Spanish soldiers to stop people from protesting against Spanish rule. He became the new leader, replacing Margaret of Parma. Because of this, Prince William of Orange was declared an enemy. Count Lamoral of Egmont was also put in prison.
Mary, Queen of Scots: A Tumultuous Year
On February 10, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, who was the husband of Mary, Queen of Scots, was found dead in Edinburgh. Later, on May 15, Mary married James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell.
However, her troubles continued. On June 15, Scottish nobles defeated Mary, Queen of Scots, at Carberry Hill. She was then held captive in Lochleven Castle. Not long after, on July 24, Mary gave up her throne. Her son, James VI, became the new King of Scotland. He was crowned on July 29 in Stirling.
Founding of Caracas
On July 25, a new city was founded in Venezuela. It was named Santiago de León de Caracas. Diego de Losada was the person who founded this important city.
Arrests and Wars in Europe
On September 9, the Duke of Alva arrested the Count of Egmont and the Count of Horne. He accused them of treason during a dinner.
The Second War of Religion began in France on September 29. The Prince of Condé and Gaspard de Coligny tried to capture King Charles IX and his mother. They failed to capture the King but took over several cities, including Orleans. They then marched towards Paris.
On November 10, the Battle of Saint-Denis took place. Anne de Montmorency led 16,000 Royalist soldiers against Condé's 3,500 Huguenots. The Huguenots fought bravely for hours before being pushed back. Montmorency was badly hurt and later died.
New City in Norway
King Frederick II of Denmark and Norway founded a new city in Norway this year. He named it Fredrikstad.
