Roy Richard Scheider (born November 10, 1932 – died February 10, 2008) was a famous American actor. He was also an amateur boxer in his younger years. Many people remember him as one of Hollywood's most unique and talented actors.
He became well-known for his main and supporting roles in popular movies from the 1970s to the mid-1980s. Roy Scheider was nominated for several important awards, including two Academy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and a BAFTA Award.
Some of his most famous roles include Chief Martin Brody in the thrilling movie Jaws (1975) and its sequel Jaws 2 (1978). He also played Detective "Cloudy" Russo in The French Connection (1971) and Joe Gideon in All That Jazz (1979). Later, he was Captain Nathan Bridger in the science-fiction TV show seaQuest DSV (1993–1996).

Early Life and Education
Roy Scheider was born in Orange, New Jersey. His mother, Anna, was of Irish background, and his father, Roy Bernhard Scheider, was an auto mechanic of German descent.
As a child, Roy was very athletic. He played baseball and competed in boxing. He was a welterweight boxer, weighing about 140 pounds (63.5 kg). He even competed in the Diamond Gloves Boxing Tournament in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
Roy went to Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey, and graduated in 1950. He was later honored by his school in 1985. After high school, he decided to focus on acting. He studied drama at both Rutgers University and Franklin and Marshall College.
Roy Scheider's Boxing Days
Between 1946 and 1949, Roy Scheider boxed as an amateur in New Jersey. He once said in an interview that he started boxing to lose weight. He didn't really want to fight, but his trainer encouraged him. In his second fight, he broke his nose. Despite this, he had a good record of 11 wins and 1 loss, with six knockouts. He even beat the person who had previously defeated him.
Serving in the Air Force
Roy Scheider also served in the United States Air Force. He was a first lieutenant in Air Operations from 1955 to 1958. After that, he was a reservist captain in the Air Force Reserve Command until 1964.

Becoming a Star
In 1971, Roy Scheider became much more famous with two popular movies. He was in Klute and The French Connection. For The French Connection, where he played a detective, he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. This made him a very sought-after actor.
His first main role was in The Seven-Ups (1973). Then came his most iconic role: Chief Martin Brody in the huge hit movie Jaws (1975). In Jaws, he said the famous line, "You're gonna need a bigger boat," which is one of the most well-known movie quotes ever. He also starred in Marathon Man (1976) with Dustin Hoffman.
Roy Scheider returned as Chief Martin Brody in Jaws 2 in 1978, which was also a big success. In 1979, he received his second Academy Award nomination, this time for Best Actor, for his role in All That Jazz. In this movie, he played a character based on the film's director, Bob Fosse.
He continued to star in many films, including Blue Thunder (1983), where he played an officer in a special attack helicopter. He also appeared as Dr. Heywood Floyd in 2010 (1984), which was a sequel to the classic science-fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Later Roles and TV Work
In his later career, Roy Scheider took on various interesting roles. He played a mob boss in Romeo Is Bleeding (1994) and a corrupt insurance executive in John Grisham's The Rainmaker (1997). He also appeared as the father of the main character in The Punisher (2004).
One of his notable television roles was as Captain Nathan Bridger in the Steven Spielberg-produced series seaQuest DSV. He was the lead star for 47 episodes. He also lent his voice to two episodes of the animated show Family Guy.
Roy Scheider narrated and helped produce a 2006 documentary about Jaws called The Shark is Still Working. In 2007, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the SunDeis Film Festival. After he passed away, a biography called Roy Scheider: A Life was released to honor his life and career.
Personal Life
Roy Scheider was married twice. He first married Cynthia Bebout in 1962. They had one daughter, Maximillia. They divorced in 1986. In 1989, he married actress Brenda Siemer. They had a son, Christian Scheider, and adopted a daughter named Molly. They were married until his death.
Death
In 2004, Roy Scheider was diagnosed with a type of cancer called multiple myeloma. He received treatment for it in 2005. He passed away on February 10, 2008, in Little Rock, Arkansas, at the age of 75.
