Roy Lester Schneider was born on May 13, 1939. He is an American politician and a doctor. He served as the fifth elected Governor of the United States Virgin Islands. He was governor from January 5, 1995, to January 4, 1999.

Early Life and Education
Roy Schneider was born on the island of Saint Thomas in 1939. He went to Howard University for his college studies. In 1961, he earned a bachelor's degree. He then continued his studies and received a medical degree in 1965.
Military Service
After finishing his education, Schneider joined the U.S. Army. He served from 1966 to 1968 during the Vietnam War. In Vietnam, he worked as a medical advisor and a surgeon. He helped many people with his medical skills.
For his service, the United States gave him the Bronze Star. This is a special award for bravery. The Republic of Vietnam also honored him with the Vietnamese Honor Medal First Class. He also received the Technical Service Honor Medal. He reached the rank of Captain in the Army.
Career as a Doctor and Public Servant
After his time in the military, Roy Schneider returned home. He became a doctor in the U.S. Virgin Islands. He cared for many patients in his community.
Later, he took on an important role in public health. From 1977 to 1987, he was the U.S. Virgin Islands' Commissioner of Health. In this job, he was in charge of health services for everyone.
Becoming Governor
In 1994, Roy Schneider decided to run for governor. He was elected and became the leader of the U.S. Virgin Islands. He served one term as governor.
In 1999, he ran for re-election but was not chosen again. Charles Wesley Turnbull became the next governor. The National Governors Association considers Roy Schneider to have been a Republican governor.
Today, there is a hospital named after him. The Roy Lester Schneider Hospital is on Saint Thomas. It helps many people in the community.
