Early Life and Military Service
Ernesto Teodoro Moneta was born in Milan. When he was just 15 years old, he took part in an important event. This was the "Five Days of Milan" in 1848. During this time, people in Milan rose up against Austrian rule.
Later, he went to a military school. In 1859, he joined Garibaldi's famous group, the Expedition of the Thousand. He also fought with the Italian army in 1866. This was during the Third Italian War of Independence against the Austrians.
From Soldier to Peacemaker
After his time as a soldier, Moneta became a dedicated peace activist. He worked hard to promote peace around the world. It was a big change from his military past.
Between 1867 and 1896, he worked as an editor. He led a democratic newspaper in Milan called Il Secolo. This paper was published by Edoardo Sonzogno.
Working for Peace
In 1890, Moneta started a group called the Lombard Association for Peace and Arbitration. This group was based in Lombardy, Italy. They wanted countries to reduce their weapons. They also dreamed of creating a group like the League of Nations. This group would help solve problems between countries peacefully. They also hoped for a Permanent Court of Arbitration. This would be a place where countries could settle their disagreements.
Nobel Peace Prize
Ernesto Teodoro Moneta's hard work for peace was recognized. In 1907, he won the Nobel Peace Prize. He shared this important award with Louis Renault. The Nobel Peace Prize is given to people who have done the most for peace.
