Early Life and Basketball Beginnings
Jackson was born in San Diego County, California. His mother, Apples Jones, was in the U.S. Navy at the time. When he was eight months old, they moved to Detroit to be closer to family.
In eighth grade, Josh repeated the year at Voyager Middle School. This was because his love for basketball was taking up too much time from his schoolwork. He attended Consortium College Prep School in Detroit, Michigan for his first two years of high school. Later, he moved to Napa, California and went to Justin-Siena High School for his junior and senior years.
High School Basketball Career
As a freshman at Consortium College Prep School, Jackson showed great skill. He averaged 17 points, six rebounds, four assists, and four blocks per game. In his sophomore year, he helped his school win its first state championship. He averaged 28 points, 15 rebounds, and six assists per game that season.
Before his junior year, Jackson and his family moved to California. He played for Prolific Prep at Justin-Siena High School in Napa, California. As a junior, he averaged 31.2 points per game and 5.4 assists. In his senior year, he averaged 26.9 points and 13.1 rebounds per game.
Jackson also played AAU basketball for 1Nation Elite, a team started by his mother. In March 2016, he played in the 2016 McDonald's All-American Boys Game. He was the top scorer with 19 points and also had four rebounds and three assists. He was named co-MVP of the game along with Frank Jackson.
Josh Jackson was considered one of the best high school players in the 2016 class. He was ranked number one by Rivals.com and Scout.com. ESPN ranked him number two.
College Basketball Journey
On April 11, 2016, Jackson announced he would attend the University of Kansas to play basketball. He chose Kansas over Michigan State and Arizona.
During his only season at Kansas, Jackson showed he was a well-rounded player. He was good at scoring, rebounding, passing, and defending. Even though he played power forward, which wasn't his usual position, he still performed very well. He averaged 16.3 points, 7.4 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.7 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game.
Because of his strong performance, he received many honors. He was named to the All-Big 12 First Team and was the Big 12 Freshman of the Year. He was also recognized as a second-team All-American by Sporting News. The Associated Press and National Association of Basketball Coaches named him a third-team All-American. On April 17, 2017, Jackson decided to enter the 2017 NBA draft. He hired B. J. Armstrong as his agent, ending his college career early.
