Early Life and College Basketball
Richaun Holmes grew up in Lockport, Illinois. His parents are both religious leaders who run a church. When he was in high school, Richaun grew a lot. He went from being 6 feet 2 inches tall to 6 feet 9 inches tall.
Even with his height, he did not get many offers to play for big college basketball teams at first. He decided to play for Moraine Valley Community College in Illinois.
Playing at Moraine Valley
At Moraine Valley, Richaun had a great season. He scored about 19 points per game and grabbed over 9 rebounds. He also blocked more than 5 shots per game. Because of his strong performance, he was named a junior college All-American. This honor helped him get noticed by bigger universities.
Time at Bowling Green
After one year at Moraine Valley, Richaun transferred to Bowling Green University. In his first year there, he continued to improve his game. He averaged 6.5 points and 5 rebounds per game.
By his junior year, his scoring had doubled. He also became very good at blocking shots. A new coach, Chris Jans, helped Richaun work on all parts of his game. Richaun even practiced shooting 1,000 three-point shots a day! This hard work paid off. In his senior year, he averaged 14.7 points and 8 rebounds. He also shot very well from the field and from three-point range. His team improved a lot, winning 21 games that season.
