Benjamin Roy Armstrong Jr. (born September 9, 1967) is an American former professional basketball player. He is best known for winning three National Basketball Association (NBA) championships. He played as a point guard for the Chicago Bulls.

Early Life and College Career

Growing Up in Michigan

B. J. Armstrong was born in Detroit, Michigan. He went to Brother Rice High School in Bloomfield Township, Michigan. He finished high school in 1985.

Playing for the Iowa Hawkeyes

After high school, Armstrong played college basketball at the University of Iowa. He had a great career there. He became the Hawkeyes' all-time leader in assists with 517. He also ranked high in steals and total points for the school. As a senior, he averaged 18.6 points and 5.4 assists per game. He earned his college degree in May 1989.

NBA Career Highlights

Joining the Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls picked B. J. Armstrong in the first round of the 1989 NBA draft. He quickly helped the team improve. In the 1990 season, the Bulls won 55 games. They made it to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Winning Championships with the Bulls

Armstrong was a key part of the Bulls' success in the early 1990s.

  • In 1991, he helped the Bulls win their first NBA title. They beat the Los Angeles Lakers.
  • In 1992, he scored double-digit points often. He came off the bench to help the Bulls win their second straight title.
  • By 1993, Armstrong became a starter. He helped the Bulls win their third straight championship. He also led the NBA in three-point shooting that year.

Becoming an All-Star

In 1994, Michael Jordan retired for a short time. Armstrong stepped up as a leader. He was voted to start in the 1994 NBA All-Star Game. He also finished second in the NBA for three-point percentage. The Bulls won 55 games that season.

Moving to Other Teams

After his time with the Bulls, Armstrong played for other NBA teams.

  • He was the first player picked in the 1995 NBA Expansion Draft. He was traded to the Golden State Warriors. He played for them in 1996 and 1997.
  • He then played for the Charlotte Hornets in 1997–98.
  • Later, he briefly played for the Orlando Magic in 1999.

Returning to Chicago and Retirement

On August 30, 1999, B. J. Armstrong signed with the Bulls again. He played his final season in 1999–2000 with the team that drafted him. He retired at the end of that season.

Life After Basketball

Working in the Bulls' Front Office

After retiring, Armstrong joined the Chicago Bulls' front office. He worked as a special assistant. He later became a scout for a few seasons, leaving in 2005.

Becoming a Sports Agent

Since 2006, Armstrong has worked for Wasserman Media Group. This company represents professional athletes. He is now a sports agent. He has represented famous players like Derrick Rose. Rose was the first player picked in the 2008 NBA draft. Armstrong also works with other NBA players, including Bismack Biyombo and JaVale McGee.
