  • 1624 – King Louis XIII of France chose Cardinal Richelieu to be his main advisor, or prime minister.
  • 1645 – Sweden and Denmark signed the Peace of Brömsebro, ending a conflict between them.
  • 1650 – Colonel George Monck started a new English Army group. This group later became the famous Coldstream Guards.
  • 1704 – During the War of the Spanish Succession, English and Imperial armies won the Battle of Blenheim. They defeated French and Bavarian troops in a major battle.
  • 1779 – In the American Revolutionary War, the British Navy defeated the Penobscot Expedition. This was a big loss for the American naval forces at the time.
  • 1792 – King Louis XVI of France was officially arrested by the National Tribunal. He was declared an "enemy of the people" during the French Revolution.
  • 1806 – The Battle of Mišar began during the Serbian Revolution. This battle lasted two days and ended with a Serbian victory over the Ottomans.
  • 1814 – The Convention of London was signed in England. This treaty was an agreement between the United Kingdom and the United Netherlands.
  • 1868 – A very strong earthquake, the Arica earthquake, hit southern Peru. It caused over 25,000 deaths and created a huge tsunami that reached Hawaii and New Zealand.
  • 1889 – William Gray from Hartford, Connecticut, received a patent for his "Coin-controlled apparatus for telephones." This was an early version of a payphone.
  • 1898 – During the Spanish–American War, Spanish and American forces had a planned "mock battle" for Manila. The Spanish commander surrendered to prevent the city from falling to Filipino rebels.
  • 1898Carl Gustav Witt discovered 433 Eros, which was the first near-Earth asteroid ever found.
  • 1900 – The ship Deutschland set a new speed record for crossing the Atlantic Ocean. It arrived in Plymouth, England, in just over five days.

  • 1905 – People in Norway voted to end their union with Sweden. This led to Norway becoming an independent country.
  • 1913 – The first stainless steel was produced in the UK by Harry Brearley. This material is now used in many everyday items.
  • 1918 – Women joined the United States Marine Corps for the first time. Opha May Johnson was the very first woman to enlist.
  • 1918 – Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW) became a public company in Germany.
  • 1920 – The Polish–Soviet War: The Battle of Warsaw began. This important battle lasted until August 25th and resulted in a defeat for the Red Army.
  • 1937 – The Second Sino-Japanese War: The Battle of Shanghai started. This was a major and long battle between China and Japan.
  • 1942 – Major General Eugene Reybold approved the building of facilities for the "Development of Substitute Materials" project. This project later became known as the Manhattan Project, which developed the atomic bomb.
  • 1944World War II: German troops began to destroy and loot the town of Anogeia in Crete. This continued until September 5th.
  • 1954 – Radio Pakistan played the "Qaumī Tarāna" for the first time. This is the national anthem of Pakistan.
  • 1960 – The Central African Republic declared its independence from France.
  • 1961Cold War: East Germany closed the border between East and West Berlin. They started building the Berlin Wall to stop people from escaping to the West. This day is sometimes called Barbed Wire Sunday.
  • 1964 – Peter Allen and Gwynne Evans were the last people to be executed in the United Kingdom for murder.
  • 1969 – The Apollo 11 astronauts, who were the first to land on the Moon, were honored with a big parade in New York City. They also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Richard Nixon.
  • 1990 – A Chinese fishing boat sank after being hit by a Taiwanese naval vessel. This happened during an operation to send Chinese immigrants back home, and 21 people died.
  • 2004 – One hundred fifty-six Congolese refugees were killed at a camp in Burundi.
  • 2008Russo-Georgian War: Russian soldiers took control of the Georgian city of Gori.
