Early Life and Political Career
Watban Ibrahim al-Nasiri was born in 1952 in Tikrit, which was part of the Kingdom of Iraq then. Because he was Saddam Hussein's half-brother, Watban was a very close advisor. He was part of Saddam's inner circle, meaning he was among the most trusted people around the leader.
Watban held several important roles in the government's security groups. In these roles, he was accused of being involved in actions against the Kurdish people in Northern Iraq. He became the Interior Minister in 1991. As Interior Minister, he was accused of overseeing the arrest and harsh treatment of many prisoners. Actions taken against people who opposed the government were very severe.
Role in the Ba'ath Party
Watban was a member of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party. This was the ruling political party in Iraq for many years. Even though he had important jobs, some people believed that Saddam did not fully trust him.
After the 2003 Invasion
In 2003, a group of countries led by the United States invaded Iraq. After this invasion, Watban was one of the most wanted people by the U.S. military. He was listed as the "five of spades" in a special deck of cards used to identify wanted Iraqi officials.
He was captured on April 13, 2003, while trying to escape to Syria.
Later Years and Death
On March 11, 2009, Watban was sentenced to death. This sentence was given because of his role in the actions taken against 42 merchants. These merchants were accused of changing food prices.
On July 14, 2011, the U.S. handed Watban over to Iraqi authorities. It was expected that he would be executed soon after. However, he remained in prison. Watban Ibrahim al-Nasiri died in prison on August 13, 2015, from natural causes.
