Royal Successions in Hungary and Poland

  • Hungary's New Queen: King Louis I of Hungary died. His daughter, Mary, became the new Queen of Hungary.
  • Poland's Choice: The people of Poland did not want to be ruled by Mary's fiancé, who would later become Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund. So, they chose Mary's younger sister, Jadwiga, to rule Poland. After two years of talks, Jadwiga was crowned "King" in 1384. This was unusual because she was a woman, but she was given the title "King" to show her full authority.
  • Naples Succession: Joan I of Naples died while imprisoned. Charles of Durazzo then became the new ruler of Naples.
