José Ramón Guizado Valdés (born August 13, 1899 – died November 2, 1965) was the 17th President of Panama. He was a member of the National Patriotic Coalition (CNP) political party.

Early Life and Education

José Ramón Guizado went to Vanderbilt University in the United States. He earned a degree in engineering in 1920. Before he became a politician, Guizado worked as a construction engineer and was very successful.

Political Career

Guizado served as Second Vice President under Arnulfo Arias from 1949 to 1951. Later, he was the First Vice President for Alcibíades Arosemena from 1951 to 1952.

He also worked as the Minister of Foreign Affairs. In this role, he helped with important talks directly with the United States. These talks were about how the United States used the Panama Canal.

José Guizado became president after the sudden death of the previous president, José Antonio Remón Cantera.

Challenges as President

In 1955, during a review by the National Assembly of Panama, Guizado was questioned about the events surrounding his predecessor's death. President Remón Cantera had died on January 2, 1955, at a racetrack in Panama.

A person named Ruben Miro was suspected in the case and said that Guizado had known about the plans. Guizado, along with his son and business partners, was held for a time while the investigation continued. Guizado was found to have some responsibility and was held for a period.

However, two years later, Ruben Miro was cleared of the charges. Because of this, José Guizado was also cleared and released. He then got back all the rights and honors that a former Panamanian president has.

Personal Life

José Guizado married Maria Paredes Guizado in 1924. They had a son and a daughter together. Guizado enjoyed playing golf and watching baseball in his free time. He passed away from a heart attack in Miami Beach, Florida, when he was 66 years old.
