Key Events of 1553
New Schools and Royal Changes
- On June 26, 1553, two important schools were founded in England. These were Christ's Hospital and King Edward's School, Witley. They were created by a special document called a Royal Charter, which is like an official permission from the King.
- On July 6, 1553, Edward VI of England, the young King of England, passed away. His death led to a struggle for the throne.
- Just four days later, on July 10, Lady Jane Grey was announced as the new Queen of England. However, her reign lasted only nine days.
- By July 18, the Lord Mayor of London declared Queen Mary as the true Queen. Lady Jane Grey then willingly gave up her title.
- On August 3, Queen Mary arrived in London, officially taking her place on the throne.
- On August 22, the Duke of Northumberland, who had supported Lady Jane Grey, was executed.
- In September, many Protestant bishops in England were arrested. At the same time, Roman Catholic bishops were brought back into power.
Battles and Fortifications
- On August 2, a battle took place in Italy called the Battle of Marciano. French forces, led by Marshal Blaise de Monluc, were defeated by an army from the Holy Roman Empire. The French had to retreat into Siena, which was then surrounded by the imperial army.
- The Battle of Sievershausen also happened in 1553. In this battle, Elector Maurice of Saxony defeated Catholic forces. Sadly, Maurice was badly wounded during the fight and later died.
- In Shanghai, a city in China, its defenses were strengthened for the very first time in 1553.

- On September 23, the Sadians in Morocco became even stronger. They defeated the last of their enemies, making their power firm.
- On October 27, a man named Michael Servetus faced serious consequences for his Calvinist beliefs in Geneva.
