Key Events of 1555
Religious Changes in Europe
In 1555, religion was a very big deal in Europe. People had strong beliefs, and sometimes these beliefs led to conflict.
The Start of Persecution in England
On February 4, a man named John Rogers became the first Protestant to be killed for his faith in England. He was a martyr, which means someone who dies for their beliefs. Just a few days later, on February 9, John Hooper, a Bishop from Gloucester, also died for his faith. These events showed how serious the religious disagreements were in England at that time.
A New Pope Takes Office
On May 23, a new leader for the Catholic Church was chosen. Pope Paul IV became the new Pope. The Pope is the head of the Roman Catholic Church.
The Peace of Augsburg
One of the most important events of 1555 happened on September 25. This was when the Peace of Augsburg was signed. This agreement was a big step towards ending religious wars in the Holy Roman Empire (a large area in Central Europe). It allowed rulers in different regions to choose if their land would be Catholic or Protestant. This meant that people living in those areas had to follow the religion of their ruler. It was a way to try and bring peace after many years of religious fighting.
Conflict Between Nations
In 1555, there was also fighting between countries. Russia broke a 60-year-old truce (a promise to stop fighting) with Sweden. Russia attacked Finland, which was part of Sweden at the time. This showed that even with peace agreements, conflicts could still start up again.
