Joseph Louis Robert Edgar Fillion (born July 12, 1920 – died August 13, 2015) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He played as a left wing. Bob Fillion spent seven seasons with the Montreal Canadiens in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1943 to 1950. During his time with the Canadiens, he helped them win the Stanley Cup twice, in 1944 and 1946. He also played for other teams like the Buffalo Bisons and the Sherbrooke Saints. When he passed away in 2015, Bob Fillion was the last living player from the Canadiens' 1944 Stanley Cup championship team.

Bob Fillion: A Hockey Star

Bob Fillion was born in Thetford Mines, Quebec, Canada. He grew up loving hockey and became a professional player. He was known for his skills as a left winger.

His biggest success came with the Montreal Canadiens. He played for them for seven seasons. With the Canadiens, he won the famous Stanley Cup championship two times. These wins happened in the 1943–44 and 1945–46 seasons.

A Family of Hockey Players

Bob Fillion came from a very famous hockey family in Thetford Mines, Quebec. He was one of seven brothers who all played hockey!

  • His brother, Marcel Fillion, also played one game in the National Hockey League for the Boston Bruins. Marcel played in other leagues too, like the American Hockey League.
  • Another brother, Dennis, played in several different hockey leagues.
  • Georges, a defenseman, was even invited to the Montreal Canadiens training camp with Bob. However, Georges decided to go back home because he wasn't very good at speaking English.
  • Nelson, Fernand, and Jean-Marie Fillion also played in various senior hockey leagues.

All seven Fillion brothers played on the same team once. They played for the Thetford Chappies in a Quebec league during the 1940s. This is where Bob and Georges were first noticed by a scout from the Canadiens.

Life After Hockey

After his hockey career ended, Bob Fillion returned to his hometown of Thetford Mines. There, he worked as a manager in the mines. Later in his life, he moved to Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. Bob Fillion passed away in Longueuil, Quebec, in 2015.
