Early History (Before 1600)
- 447 – A very strong earthquake badly damaged parts of the Walls of Constantinople, including 57 towers.
- 963 – At the Synod of Rome, Emperor Otto I held a meeting. During this meeting, Pope John XII was removed from his position.
- 1217 – The Charter of the Forest was officially approved in London. This important document gave free men rights to use the royal forests, which had been taken away by earlier kings.
From 1601 to 1900
- 1792 – The Battle of Jemappes took place during the French Revolutionary Wars.
- 1860 – Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 16th president of the United States. He won with 40% of the public vote.
- 1869 – In New Brunswick, New Jersey, Rutgers College played against Princeton University in the first official intercollegiate American football game. Rutgers won 6–4!
- 1900 – President William McKinley was re-elected for another term. His vice-president was Theodore Roosevelt.
