- 241 BC – During the First Punic War, the Romans won a big sea battle against the Carthaginian fleet. This victory ended the war.
- 298 – The Roman Emperor Maximian finished his military campaign in North Africa. He celebrated his success with a grand entry into Carthage.
- 947 – The Later Han dynasty was started by Liu Zhiyuan, who declared himself emperor.
- 1496 – After helping to establish the city of Santo Domingo, Christopher Columbus sailed back to Spain, leaving his brother in charge.
- 1535 – On his way to Peru, a Spanish friar named Tomás de Berlanga accidentally discovered the amazing Galápagos Islands.

- 1607 – Susenyos I became the Emperor of Ethiopia after defeating the armies of Yaqob and Abuna Petros II in the Battle of Gol.
- 1629 – King Charles I of England closed down the Parliament of England. This started a period of eleven years where he ruled without Parliament, known as the Personal Rule.
- 1661 – The French "Sun King," Louis XIV, began his personal rule of France after his chief minister, Cardinal Mazarin, passed away.
- 1735 – An agreement was signed between Nader Shah and Russia near Ganja, Azerbaijan, leading to Russian troops leaving the areas they had occupied.
- 1814 – Emperor Napoleon I faced defeat at the Battle of Laon in France.
- 1830 – The Royal Netherlands East Indies Army was officially created.
- 1831 – The French Foreign Legion was formed by Louis Philippe, the King of France. It was made up of foreign soldiers.
- 1848 – The United States Senate approved the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. This treaty officially ended the Mexican–American War.
- 1861 – El Hadj Umar Tall took control of the city of Ségou, which led to the end of the Bamana Empire in Mali.
- 1873 – The first play from Azerbaijan, The Adventures of the Vizier of the Khan of Lenkaran, was performed. It was written by Akhundov.
- 1876 – The first successful test of a telephone was made by Alexander Graham Bell.
- 1891 – Almon Strowger received a patent for the Strowger switch. This invention helped automate telephone calls.
Modern Era (1901–Present)
- 1906 – The Courrières mine disaster happened in northern France. It was Europe's worst mining accident, killing 1099 miners.
- 1909 – Thailand gave up its control over the Malay states of Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis, and Terengganu by signing the Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909. These states then became British protectorates.
- 1922 – Mahatma Gandhi was arrested in India for speaking out against the government. He was sentenced to six years in prison but was released early for an operation.
- 1933 – The 1933 Long Beach earthquake shook the Greater Los Angeles Area, causing about 108 deaths.
- 1945 – During World War II, the U.S. Army Air Force used firebombs on Tokyo. This caused a massive fire that killed over 100,000 people, mostly civilians.
- 1952 – Fulgencio Batista led a successful takeover of the government in Cuba.

- 2019 – Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, a Boeing 737 MAX, crashed shortly after takeoff, killing all 157 people on board. This tragic event, along with an earlier crash, led to all 387 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft being grounded worldwide.
