Rafe Joseph Spall was born in East Dulwich, London. He is the second of three children. His father is the famous actor Timothy Spall. Rafe was named after a character his father played in a play. He always wanted to be an actor, just like his dad.

When Rafe was 14, his father became very ill. He spent about 18 months getting treatment. Rafe found his teenage years difficult because he was overweight. He said it was a "painful" time for him.
