Katalin Éva Novák (born 6 September 1977) is a Hungarian politician. She served as the president of Hungary from 2022 to 2024. When she was elected, she was 44 years old. This made her both the first woman and the youngest person ever to hold this important job. Before becoming president, she was a member of the Hungarian Parliament from 2018 to 2022. During this time, she also worked as the Minister for Family Affairs from 2020 to 2021.

Learning and Languages
Katalin Novák finished high school in Szeged in 1996. After that, she went to university. She studied economics at the Corvinus University of Budapest. She also studied law at the University of Szeged. While she was a student, she spent some time studying in Paris, France. Besides her native Hungarian, Novák is very good at languages. She speaks French, English, German, and Spanish.
Journey in Politics

Novák started her career in 2001 at the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She focused on topics related to the European Union. In 2010, she became an advisor to a minister. Two years later, in 2012, she was made the Head of Cabinet for the Ministry of Human Resources.
In 2014, she became the State Secretary for Family and Youth Affairs. This role was part of the Ministry of Human Capacities. She later became the Minister of Family Affairs in October 2020. She held this position until December 2021. From 2017 to 2021, she also served as the Vice President of the Fidesz political party.
On 21 December 2021, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced that Novák would be the Fidesz party's choice for president. On 10 March 2022, she won the election. She received 137 out of 188 votes in the National Assembly. This made her the first woman to become president in Hungary's history.
As President of Hungary


In April 2023, the Hungarian Parliament passed a bill. This bill would have allowed people to report certain families to the authorities. However, President Novák decided to veto the bill. This meant she formally stopped it from becoming a law. In May 2022, she also spoke out against the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
During the 2023 Israel-Gaza war, she spoke against the attack on Israel. She also said she supported Israel's right to defend itself. On 5 November 2023, Novák visited Israel to show her support for the country.
End of Presidency
Katalin Novák resigned from her position as president. The Hungarian Parliament officially accepted her resignation on 26 February 2024. After her resignation, László Kövér, who was the speaker of the National Assembly, took over as acting president. Novák was the second head of state in Hungary to resign since the end of communism.
Personal Life
Katalin Novák is married and has three children. Her husband is István Veres, who is an economist. He works at the Hungarian National Bank. Novák is a Reformed Christian.
Novák has strong views on family values. She supported a change to the constitution in 2020. This change aimed to strengthen rules about adoption. She believes that "the mother is a woman, the father is a man." The changes also stated that single people would need special permission to adopt.
