Jasmine Chanel Guy (born March 10, 1962) is an American actress, singer, dancer, and director. She is well-known for playing Whitley Gilbert-Wayne on the TV show A Different World. This show was a spin-off from The Cosby Show and ran from 1987 to 1993. Jasmine Guy won four NAACP Image Awards for her role on the show. She also played Roxy Harvey on Dead Like Me and Sheila "Grams" Bennett on The Vampire Diaries.

About Jasmine Guy's Early Life
Jasmine Guy was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Her father was Jamaican, and her mother was Caucasian. She grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. There, she went to Northside Performing Arts High School.
Her mother, Jaye Rudolph, used to be a high school teacher. Her father, Reverend William Vincent Guy, was a pastor and a college teacher. When she was 17, Jasmine moved to New York City. She went there to study dance at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center.

Her Roles on Television
Jasmine Guy started her TV career as a dancer in the show Fame in 1982. She worked with choreographer Debbie Allen on this show.
She is most famous for her main role as Whitley Gilbert in the TV sitcom A Different World. This show was created by Bill Cosby and aired from 1987 to 1993. Jasmine Guy appeared in every episode. She even wrote three episodes and directed one. She won six NAACP Image Awards for her acting in this series.
After A Different World, she appeared in an episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in 1991. She played Kayla, one of Will Smith's girlfriends. In 1993, she played the mother of Halle Berry's character in the TV mini-series Queen. This show was based on a book by Alex Haley.
From 1995 to 1997, Jasmine Guy had a repeating role as Kathleen, a fallen angel, in the show Touched by an Angel. In 2002, she lent her voice to the animated series Cyberchase. She played Ava, the queen of Symmetria.
In 2003, Guy starred in the series Dead Like Me. She played Roxy Harvey, a meter maid who became a grim reaper. The show ran for two seasons on Showtime. She was nominated for an NAACP Image Award for this role in 2005. She later appeared in the movie sequel, Dead Like Me: Life After Death.
From 2009 to 2017, Guy had a repeating role in The CW's series The Vampire Diaries. She played Sheila "Grams" Bennett, the grandmother of Bonnie. She also appeared in the Lifetime Christmas movie Secret Santa in 2017. More recently, she has appeared on the Amazon Prime series “Harlem.”

Jasmine Guy first appeared in a movie in 1988. It was Spike Lee's musical film School Daze. She played Dina in this movie. The next year, she was in Harlem Nights with Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor.
In 1997, she provided the voice of Sawyer in the animated movie Cats Don't Dance. In 2011, she appeared in the film October Baby. She also starred in the short film My Nephew Emmett. This film won a Student Academy Award and was nominated for an Academy Award in 2018.

Jasmine Guy has performed in many Broadway shows and national tours. She played Crow in The Wiz and Velma Kelly in Chicago.

While she was on A Different World, Jasmine Guy released her first music album in 1990. It was called Jasmine Guy. The album had three popular songs: "Try Me", "Another Like My Lover", and "Just Want to Hold You".
Jasmine Guy's Personal Life
Jasmine Guy was good friends with the rapper Tupac Shakur. They met when he appeared on A Different World in 1993. She later wrote a book about his mother, Afeni Shakur: Evolution of a Revolutionary.
Jasmine Guy married Terrence Duckett in 1998. They had one daughter together. In 2008, they got divorced after ten years of marriage. After that, Jasmine and her daughter moved to Atlanta, where Jasmine grew up.
Jasmine Guy supported Senator Bernie Sanders for President in the 2016 election.
