Chicago is a very popular American musical. It has music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. The story, called the "book," was written by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse.
The musical takes place in the city of Chicago during the Jazz Age. This was a time in the 1920s when jazz music was very popular. The story is a satire, which means it uses humor to show problems. It looks at how the legal system in Chicago might not always be fair.
The first time Chicago was performed on Broadway was in 1975. It opened at the 46th Street Theatre. This first run of the show played for 936 performances. It closed in 1977.

The 1996 Broadway version of Chicago is very famous. It holds a special record. It is the longest-running musical revival ever on Broadway. It is also the longest-running American musical in Broadway history.
Only one other show has run longer on Broadway. That show is The Phantom of the Opera. This makes Chicago the second longest-running show of all time on Broadway.
The Movie Version
Chicago was also made into a movie. The movie version came out in 2002. This film was very successful. It won the Academy Award for Best Picture. This is one of the biggest awards a movie can win.
