Thomas Steven Middleditch (born March 10, 1982) is a Canadian actor. He is famous for playing Richard Hendricks in the HBO TV show Silicon Valley. This role earned him a nomination for a top acting award.
He has also lent his voice to many animated characters. These include Penn Zero in Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero and Harold Hutchins in Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie. You might also know his voice as Terry Opposites in Solar Opposites. In 2024, Thomas Middleditch made his first appearance on Broadway in the play Eureka Day. He has also appeared in commercials for Verizon Wireless.

Early life
Thomas Middleditch was born on March 10, 1982, in British Columbia, Canada. His parents are from Britain. When he was in eighth grade, he acted in a play. He said this experience "changed everything" for him.
He discovered improv (acting without a script) in school. He performed with a group called Theatresports. His first acting job was in plays about Canadian history in his hometown.
Thomas studied theater at the University of Victoria. Later, he moved to Toronto. He got accepted into George Brown Theatre School but decided not to go. Instead, he created his own comedy sketches. He also worked at a New Balance shoe store to earn money.
He then moved to Chicago. There, he took classes at famous comedy schools like The Second City and iO Theater. He performed regularly and helped start The Improvised Shakespeare Company in 2005. Later, he moved to New York City to continue his acting career.
Career
While living in New York City, Thomas Middleditch started acting in commercials. In 2007, a funny video he made for Chicken McNuggets was bought by McDonald's and used as a commercial.
He appeared in the 2009 romantic comedy Splinterheads. He played the main character, Justin Frost. In 2010, he joined a CBS TV pilot called Hitched. He also made his first appearance in the web series Jake and Amir in 2011.
Middleditch joined the cast of the comedy film Fun Size in 2011. He also appeared in The Campaign with Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis. In 2012, he was in the comedy film Someone Marry Barry. He also had a role in The Office during its final season.
In 2013, Thomas Middleditch joined the HBO comedy show Silicon Valley. He played the lead role of Richard Hendricks. He has mentioned that the show's creators wrote the part with him in mind.
For his work on Silicon Valley, he won a Satellite Awards in 2019. He also received nominations for Critics' Choice Television Awards. In 2016, he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for his performance.
In 2013, he was cast in the comedy film Search Party. He played Nardo, who travels to Mexico to win back his fiancée. Middleditch also had a small part in the 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street.
He played a hipster thief in an episode of You're The Worst. On The Pete Holmes Show, he acted as characters like Nightcrawler from X-Men. In 2013, it was announced that he would voice the main hero in the Disney XD animated series Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero. This show started in late 2014.
In 2015, he starred in the films The Final Girls and The Bronze. He also started streaming himself playing video games on Twitch. In 2014, he joined a CollegeHumor series on YouTube called CAMP.
Middleditch voiced Harold Hutchins in DreamWorks Animation's movie Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (2017). Since 2017, he has been a spokesperson in Verizon commercials. In 2019, he appeared in the film Godzilla: King of the Monsters. He was also in the basketball video game NBA 2K20.
In April 2020, Middleditch and fellow actor Ben Schwartz starred in Middleditch and Schwartz. This was Netflix's first long-form improv special. It featured three hour-long performances.
In October 2020, Middleditch began playing Drew Dunbar in the CBS comedy series B Positive.
Personal life
Thomas Middleditch got engaged to costume designer Mollie Gates in June 2015. They were married on August 22, 2015, in his hometown. They later divorced in April 2021.
In January 2022, Thomas Middleditch shared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert that he had become a U.S. citizen.
