Early Life and Discovering Acting
Thomas Middleditch was born on March 10, 1982, in Nelson, British Columbia, Canada. His parents are from Britain. When he was in eighth grade, he acted in a play, which he said changed his life. He found out about improv (acting without a script) in school by performing with a group called Theatresports. His very first job was acting in Canadian Heritage Plays in his hometown.
He studied theater at the University of Victoria. Later, he moved to Toronto and was accepted into the George Brown Theatre School, but he decided not to go. Instead, he chose to create his own short comedy videos and worked at a New Balance shoe store to earn money. He then moved to Chicago, where he took classes at famous improv theaters like The Second City and iO Theater. He also performed regularly. In 2005, he helped start a group called The Improvised Shakespeare Company.
Because of some paperwork issues, he worked different small jobs until a theater director helped him get a work visa. While performing on a cruise ship, he got an audition for the TV show Saturday Night Live. Even though he wasn't chosen for the show, his audition helped him get a special acting deal, and he moved to New York City.
