Benjamin Joseph Schwartz was born on September 15, 1981, in The Bronx, New York City. His family, who are Jewish, raised him in a neighborhood called Riverdale. His dad used to be a social worker before working in real estate, and his mom was a music teacher. Ben also has a sister named Marni.

When Ben was eleven, his family moved to Edgemont, New York. He went to Edgemont Junior–Senior High School, where he played basketball and sang in the chorus. After high school, he went to Union College and graduated in 2003. He studied psychology and anthropology there.
