The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part is a fun computer-animated adventure comedy film from 2019. It was made by Warner Animation Group and released by Warner Bros. Pictures. The movie was directed by Mike Mitchell. It is a sequel to The Lego Movie (2014) and the fourth film in the Lego movie series. Other films in the series include The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Ninjago Movie, both released in 2017.

Many actors from the first movie returned to voice their characters. These include Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Charlie Day, Alison Brie, Nick Offerman, and Will Ferrell. New voices joined the cast, like Stephanie Beatriz, Tiffany Haddish, and Maya Rudolph. In the story, Emmet Brickowski tries to save his friends from the Systar System. He also has to deal with a big event called "Armamageddon."

Ideas for a sequel started in 2014. The movie was officially announced on February 3, 2014. At first, Chris McKay was set to direct, with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller writing and producing. The film went through many changes, including new scripts, different directors, and new release dates.

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part came out in the United States and United Kingdom on February 8, 2019. It was shown in different formats like 3D, RealD 3D, Dolby Cinema, IMAX, and 4DX. Critics generally liked the movie. They praised its humor, animation, music, and the voice acting. However, some felt it wasn't as new and exciting as the first film. The movie earned over $192 million worldwide, but it cost $99 million to make. This meant it didn't earn as much money as hoped, similar to The Lego Ninjago Movie.

Because The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part didn't do well at the box office, Warner Bros. sold the film rights for The Lego Movie series. Universal Pictures then made a deal to produce future Lego movies for five years.

Story of the Movie

Right after Lord Business's invasion, Emmet used the Piece of Resistance to destroy the Kragle (a super glue). Then, Duplo aliens arrived in the Lego universe. They looked like they wanted to destroy everything. Emmet built a heart for them as a sign of friendship. But one alien ate it and wanted more! Lucy and the other Master Builders thought this was an attack. They fought back, and the battle destroyed Bricksburg.

Five years later, Finn, a teenager in the real world, rebuilt Bricksburg as "Apocalypseburg." In the Lego world, repeated Duplo attacks had caused a lot of damage. Many friends had gone missing while searching for the Duplo home planet. Emmet was still cheerful, unlike Lucy and his friends. But he kept having visions of a disaster he called "armamageddon."

A mini-doll named General Sweet Mayhem arrived. She kidnapped all of Emmet's friends and took them to Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi. The Queen was a shape-shifting ruler of the "Systar System." She seemed to brainwash Emmet's friends into loving her world. She even convinced Batman to marry her to bring the Lego and Duplo worlds together. But Lucy was very suspicious of the Queen's plans.

Back in Apocalypseburg, Emmet tried to get the Master Builders to help him save Lucy and his friends. But they refused. They believed Emmet wasn't tough enough for the Systar System. So, Emmet built a spaceship to chase Mayhem through the "Stairgate." His ship got badly damaged and almost crashed into asteroids. Luckily, a tough adventurer named Rex Dangervest saved him.

Rex heard Emmet's story and offered to help. He took Emmet to the Systar System. On the way, Emmet tried to act like Rex to seem tougher. When they arrived, they found Lucy and learned about the wedding. Rex was sure the wedding was just a trick to start "armamageddon."

As the wedding began, Emmet, Rex, and Lucy split up to stop it. But Mayhem stopped Lucy. Mayhem insisted the wedding was actually meant to prevent "armamageddon." At the ceremony, Queen Wa'Nabi showed her true form. She was the heart Emmet had tried to give the Duplo invaders five years ago! Lucy realized Mayhem was right and tried to stop Emmet. But Rex pushed Emmet to crash the ceremony.

In the real world, Finn had found that his younger sister, Bianca, had taken his Lego figures. He had then smashed her creations. Emmet realized his mistake. But Rex grabbed him. Rex revealed he was an older version of Emmet from the future! Rex had crashed into the asteroids and ended up under the dryer, forgotten by Finn. To make sure he would exist, Rex changed his look. He built a time machine to go back and help Emmet, but also to make sure "armamageddon" happened. When Emmet tried to fight back, Rex knocked him under the same dryer. This made sure Rex would continue to exist.

In the real world, Finn and Bianca's mother was tired of their fighting. She told them to put the Lego toys into a storage bin. Lucy recognized this as Emmet's "armamageddon" (which sounds like "our mama gets in"). Both the Lego and Duplo figures were put into the "Bin of Storajj." They feared they would never escape.

While everyone sang about their terrible situation, Lucy refused to give up. She sang to encourage everyone not to quit. Finn heard the song from the Bin and opened it. He saw Queen Wa'Nabi in pieces. He remembered the day he gave the heart to Bianca when they were young. Finn rebuilt the heart and made up with Bianca. They started playing together.

In the Lego universe, Lucy and the others escaped the Bin. They helped rebuild Apocalypseburg and Queen Wa'Nabi's world. Lucy saved Emmet from Rex and destroyed Rex's time machine. Emmet accepted that he would never be like Rex. With this realization, a sad Rex disappeared, fixing the time problem.

Finn and Bianca's mother saw them playing together and changed her mind. The Lego universe was rebuilt as a mix of Apocalypseburg and the Systar System. It was renamed "Syspocalypstar." Lord Business appeared, but Benny accidentally set him on fire. Lord Business ran into a store and exploded. Emmet's home was rebuilt. The movie ends with Lucy giving Emmet a gift: the original album of "Everything Is Awesome". She revealed that she helped create the song, which surprised Emmet.

Music in the Movie

After the first movie had the very popular song "Everything Is Awesome", the filmmakers wanted a similar song for the sequel. They created "Catchy Song". This song mainly repeats the line "This song's gonna get stuck inside your head." Jon Lajoie wrote the song, and Dillon Francis performed it with T-Pain and Lay Lay. Lajoie said that "Everything is Awesome" was "annoyingly catchy." He felt the only way to make a more memorable song was to make it even more "annoying"!

Mark Mothersbaugh, who wrote the music for the first movie and The Lego Ninjago Movie, also wrote the music for this sequel.

What's Next for the Lego Movies?

After The Lego Movie 2 didn't make as much money as expected, Warner Bros. let their agreement with Lego end. Lego then started talking with Universal Pictures about a new movie deal. Dan Lin is still expected to be a producer through his company, Rideback. In April 2020, Universal made a 5-year deal for new Lego films.
