The story follows Batman as he learns to work with others and overcome his biggest fear: being part of a family.

The Lego Batman Movie was first shown in Dublin, Ireland, on January 29, 2017. It came out in the United States on February 10, 2017. Critics generally liked the movie for its animation, voice acting, and humor. It also made a lot of money, earning $312 million worldwide.

Story of the Lego Batman Movie

In the Lego world, Batman protects Gotham City from bad guys. He stops the Joker and other villains from destroying the city. But Batman accidentally hurts Joker's feelings by saying Joker isn't important to him. This makes the Joker want to get the ultimate revenge.

The next day, Batman's secret identity, Bruce Wayne, goes to a party. It's for Police Commissioner Gordon, who is retiring. His daughter, Barbara Gordon, is taking his place. Bruce Wayne is distracted by Barbara and accidentally agrees to adopt an excited orphan named Dick Grayson. Barbara wants to change the police force so they don't always need Batman. This makes Bruce Wayne angry.

The Joker crashes the party with other villains. Surprisingly, the Joker gives himself up to the police. He also helps capture almost all the other villains, except Harley Quinn. With so many villains in jail, Batman feels sad because Gotham doesn't seem to need him anymore.

Batman's Plan and New Friends

Batman thinks the Joker is planning something. He decides to steal Superman's Phantom Zone projector. This device can send anyone to the Phantom Zone, where very dangerous villains are kept. Alfred, Batman's butler, tells him to take care of Dick. Batman doesn't want to at first, but Alfred lets Dick into the Batcave.

Batman, still in his costume, tells Dick he is adopting him too. He makes Dick his sidekick, Robin. Together, Batman and Robin get the projector from the Fortress of Solitude. They break into Arkham Asylum and send the Joker to the Phantom Zone. Barbara suspects the Joker wanted to be sent there, so she locks up Batman and Robin.

Joker's Return and New Threats

While the projector is being held as proof, Harley Quinn steals it back. This is part of Joker's plan. She frees him, and he returns to Gotham with many villains he found in the Phantom Zone. These include Sauron from The Lord of the Rings. Sauron tells the Joker that Batman is Bruce Wayne.

The new villains attack Gotham and take over Wayne Island. Barbara realizes Gotham really does need Batman. She frees Batman and Robin. They team up with Alfred to stop the new threat. Batman's friends fight well, but Batman sends them away. He fears losing them, just like he lost his parents. He wants to face the Joker alone.

Learning to Trust and Work Together

The Joker believes Batman can't change. He sends Batman to the Phantom Zone. Then, the Joker steals bombs from the Batcave to destroy Gotham. Meanwhile, Phyllis, the Phantom Zone's gatekeeper, shows Batman how he has treated Dick, Alfred, Barbara, and even the Joker badly. Batman finally accepts his biggest fear: being part of a family. He decides to change.

Batman's friends return to help him, but they are in danger. Batman makes a deal with Phyllis to return to Gotham. He needs to get the escaped prisoners from the Phantom Zone. He arrives just in time to save his friends. He apologizes for leaving them and asks for their help. They agree, and Barbara becomes Batgirl.

With help from Gotham's other supervillains, who felt ignored by the Joker, Batman and his team defeat the escaped villains. They send them back to the Phantom Zone. However, the Joker's bombs explode, tearing Gotham apart. Batman convinces Joker to help him by saying Joker gives him a reason to be a hero. With everyone's help, they save Gotham by linking together to fix the city.

Afterward, Batman tells Dick that he is Bruce Wayne. He then plans to return to the Phantom Zone to face the consequences. But Phyllis stops him. She sees that he has become a true hero. Batman then gives the Joker and other villains a head start to escape. He knows they are no match for the new Bat-family.

Making the Movie

How the Idea Started

In October 2014, after The Lego Movie was very successful, Warner Bros. decided to make more Lego films. One of these was The Lego Batman Movie, focusing on Batman. Chris McKay, who helped direct The Lego Movie, became the director for this film. Will Arnett returned to voice Batman.

The story was written by Seth Grahame-Smith. Producers included Dan Lin, Roy Lee, and Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. The movie was released earlier than planned, on February 10, 2017. This was the first animated movie based on a licensed Lego toy line.

Inspirations and Challenges

Chris McKay said making the film was "a very mixed blessing." They had a tight schedule of two and a half years, which made it hard to include everything he wanted. He was inspired by funny movies like The Naked Gun and Airplane!.

McKay wanted to combine all the different versions of Batman and Robin from comics and movies. He imagined putting the very serious, grumpy Batman with a super positive, energetic Robin. He said it was like putting the serious Batman with the cheerful Burt Ward Robin from the old TV show.

Chris Miller, one of the producers, later explained that all the Lego movies come from a child's imagination. The Lego Batman Movie was also imagined by children, even though they don't appear in the film.

Choosing the Voices

Movie Music

The music for The Lego Batman Movie was composed by Lorne Balfe. This was the first Lego movie not scored by Mark Mothersbaugh. The soundtrack album came out on February 3, 2017.

The first preview trailer for the movie came out on March 24, 2016. It played before showings of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in theaters. More trailers were released later that year.

Many Lego sets were made based on scenes from the film. There were also collectible Lego Minifigures. A special Story Pack for the video game Lego Dimensions was released on February 10, 2017. It let players play through the movie's story in the game.

In January 2017, Chevrolet built a life-sized Lego Batmobile inspired by the movie. It was made from about 350,000 Lego pieces! Chevrolet also made a TV commercial for the movie.

Warner Bros. also created Lego versions of billboards for TV shows. The Big Bang Theory even had a Lego version of its opening scene in one episode.

Release of the Movie

In Theaters

The Lego Batman Movie first showed in Dublin, Ireland, on January 29, 2017. It was released in the United States and the United Kingdom on February 10. You could watch it in 3D, IMAX 3D, and other special formats. This was the first animated Batman movie to have a full theater release since Batman: Mask of the Phantasm in 1993.

At Home

The movie was released for digital download on May 19, 2017. This version included a short film called The Master: A LEGO Ninjago Short and four new short films. The Lego Batman Movie was released on DVD, Blu-ray, and Ultra HD Blu-ray on June 13, 2017.

Video Games

Characters from The Lego Batman Movie are in the Lego Dimensions video game. Robin and Batgirl were included in a Story Pack for the game.

A mobile game based on The Lego Batman Movie was also released. It's an "endless-runner" game and was available for Android and iOS devices.

Cancelled Sequel

A sequel to The Lego Batman Movie was planned in December 2018. Chris McKay was set to direct it again, and it was supposed to come out in 2022. However, the sequel was cancelled. This happened because Universal Pictures bought the film rights to The Lego Movie franchise in 2020.

In 2021, Chris McKay shared some details about the cancelled sequel. It would have been called Lego Superfriends. The story would have focused on Batman's relationship with the Justice League, especially Superman. The main villains would have been Lex Luthor and OMAC.
