Zoë Kravitz (born December 1, 1988) is an American actress and filmmaker. She is known for her roles in many popular movies and TV shows. She also sings and makes music.
Zoë started acting in the romantic comedy film No Reservations (2007). She became well-known for playing Angel Salvadore (Tempest) in the superhero movie X-Men: First Class (2011). She also had important roles in The Divergent Series (2014–2016) and the Fantastic Beasts film series (2016–2018).
She received praise for her main roles in the HBO drama series Big Little Lies (2017–2019) and the Hulu romantic comedy series High Fidelity (2020). She was even nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for her guest role as herself in the Apple TV+ comedy series The Studio (2025). Zoë appeared in George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) and starred in many independent films like ... (2015), Gemini (2017), and Kimi (2022).
She lent her voice to Catwoman in The Lego Batman Movie (2017) and Mary Jane in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018). Later, she played Catwoman in the live-action DC film The Batman (2022). Time magazine named Zoë one of the 100 Most Influential People in 2022. She also started filmmaking by helping write and direct the thriller Blink Twice (2024).
In music, Zoë is the lead singer of the band Lolawolf. She has also worked with famous artists like Drake, Taylor Swift, Rae Sremmurd and Janelle Monáe. She has been nominated for two Grammy Award for Album of the Year awards.

Early Life and Education
Zoë Kravitz was born on December 1, 1988, in Venice, Los Angeles. Her parents are musician Lenny Kravitz and actress Lisa Bonet. Both her parents have mixed heritage, being half African-American and half-Ashkenazi Jewish. Her grandmother, actress Roxie Roker, and her maternal grandfather, Allen Bonet, were African American. Her paternal grandfather, NBC news producer Sy Kravitz, and maternal grandmother, Arlene Litman, were both Ashkenazi Jews. Zoë's paternal grandfather's family came from Russia. Zoë considers herself a secular Jew, meaning she identifies with the culture but not necessarily the religious practices.

The song "Flowers for Zoë" on her father's second album Mama Said was written as a tribute to her when she was two years old.
Zoë's parents got married in 1987 and divorced in 1993 when she was five years old. She lived with her mother in Topanga Canyon and then moved to Miami at age 11 to live with her father. She spent her summers with her mother. Zoë has two younger half-siblings from her mother's second marriage to actor Jason Momoa. Her godfather is film producer Bruce Cohen, and her godmothers are actresses Marisa Tomei and Cree Summer.
Zoë went to Miami Country Day School and Rudolf Steiner School in Manhattan, graduating in 2007. She faced challenges with eating habits during high school, which continued until she was about 24. She started studying acting at the State University of New York at Purchase but left after a year. She then moved to Brooklyn, New York, to work in films.
Career Highlights
Early Roles and Breakthrough (2008–2012)
When Zoë was growing up in Topanga Canyon, she joined local drama clubs. She even put on shows at her grandmother's house, often acting out scenes from "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." Her mother encouraged her to watch classic movies from her own childhood.
Zoë got her first movie role while still in high school. She played a babysitter in the 2007 romantic comedy No Reservations. She also appeared in the action thriller The Brave One. In 2008, Zoë was in the music video for Jay Z's "I Know" and sang in will.i.am's music video "We Are the Ones," which supported US presidential candidate Barack Obama. That same year, she appeared in the family drama Birds of America and the comedy The ... of a High School President.
She started making music when she was 16. In 2009, she formed and became the lead singer of the band Elevator Fight. The band performed at the South by Southwest music festival and at the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia. Zoë said in 2011 that music was a hobby for her. She also performed with a cabaret group called The Citizens Band.
In 2009, Zoë co-starred in the independent drama The Greatest. She also became the main spokesperson for Vera Wang's Princess perfume. In 2010, she appeared in It's Kind of a Funny Story and Twelve. Zoë then starred as the main female character in the romantic comedy Beware the Gonzo. She was also featured in a campaign for fashion designer Alexander Wang in 2010.
In 2011, Zoë appeared in the coming-of-age film Yelling to the Sky. She also had a role in eight episodes of the Showtime TV series ..., where she played Pearl, the singer of an all-female band. That year, she played the comic book character Angel Salvadore in X-Men: First Class. Zoë filmed her scenes in London and did special wire work to show her character's ability to fly. In late 2011, she finished working on a film called Treading Water, which was released in 2013 as The Boy Who Smells Like Fish. She also represented Vera Wang's new Preppy Princess fragrance.
Rising to Fame and Expanding Her Work (2013–2019)
In 2013, Zoë co-starred in After Earth. She also launched a jewelry line with the Swarovski crystal company. Her designs were inspired by ethnic and vintage jewelry, and her birthstone, Turquoise. In 2014, she played Christina in Divergent. Zoë continued her role in the sequels Insurgent and Allegiant. Also in 2014, she starred in the independent drama The Road Within and the romantic comedy Pretend We're Kissing.
Zoë started the band Lolawolf while filming The Road Within in Los Angeles. The band released an EP and performed at the Mercury Lounge in November 2013. The band was named after Zoë's younger siblings, Lola and Nakoa-Wolf. They released their first album, Calm Down, on October 21, 2014. They also toured with artists like Lily Allen, Miley Cyrus, and Warpaint in 2014. The band released another EP, Every...day, on June 23, 2015.
Zoë appeared in the 2014 film Good Kill. In 2015, she was in the comedy-drama ... and Mad Max: Fury Road. In 2016, she co-starred in the action thriller Vincent N Roxxy and appeared in the independent film Adam Green's Aladdin. Zoë also had a role as Leta Lestrange in the Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. In 2017, she starred in the mystery thriller Gemini. That same year, she appeared in the comedy film Rough Night and voiced Selina Kyle / Catwoman in the animated superhero film The Lego Batman Movie. She also became the face of designer Alexis Bittar's jewelry line in 2015.
From 2017 to 2019, Zoë starred in the HBO drama series Big Little Lies, playing Bonnie Carlson. Her performance earned her nominations for two Black Reel Awards and a Screen Actors Guild Award. Zoë appeared in the 2018 science fiction action film Kin and played Leta Lestrange again in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, with a bigger role. Also in 2018, she appeared on BBC Children in Need with Eddie Redmayne. Zoë was named one of the best-dressed women in 2018 by the fashion website Net-a-Porter. That same year, she was featured on the song "Screwed" on Janelle Monáe's album Dirty Computer and on "Anti-Social Smokers Club" on Rae Sremmurd's album SR3MM.
2020s and Beyond
In 2019, Zoë was chosen to play the main character in the Hulu romantic comedy TV series High Fidelity. This show was based on the 2000 film of the same name, which her mother starred in. The series started on Valentine's Day, 2020, and received great reviews, especially for Zoë's performance as Rob Gorgan. Margaret Lyons from The New York Times called her performance "mesmerizing." Even though it was praised, High Fidelity was canceled after one season. For her role, Zoë won a Black Reel Award and was nominated for a Satellite Award. Also in 2020, she starred as one of the main characters in Viena and the Fantomes.
Zoë played Selina Kyle / Catwoman in live-action in director Matt Reeves' The Batman. The movie was released on March 4, 2022, and was very successful, earning over $700 million worldwide. Zoë's performance received many positive reviews. The Independent said that "Kravitz's Catwoman brings an almost-extinct sensuality to the role." She earned several award nominations for her performance, including the Saturn Award for Best Actress. Zoë also starred in filmmaker Steven Soderbergh's thriller Kimi, which also received good reviews for her acting.
In June 2021, Zoë announced that she would direct her first film, Blink Twice, which she also helped write. In August 2021, it was announced that Zoë would star in and be an executive producer for a coming-of-age animated series called Phatty Patty. In June 2022, it was shared that Zoë would star in and produce the heist thriller The Sundance Kid Might Have Some Regrets for Warner Bros..
Time magazine recognized Zoë as one of the 100 Most Influential People in 2022. In May 2025, she worked with the champagne brand Dom Pérignon for a campaign called "Creation is an Eternal Journey."

She was in a relationship with actor Penn Badgley from 2011 to 2013.
In 2016, Zoë started dating actor Karl Glusman. They got engaged in February 2018 and were married at Zoë's father's home in Paris on June 29, 2019. In December 2020, Zoë filed for divorce, which was finalized in August 2021. She began dating actor Channing Tatum in 2021 and they announced their engagement in 2023. In October 2024, it was reported that they had separated.
