Edward John David Redmayne (born 6 January 1982) is a talented English actor. He has won many important awards, including an Academy Award (also known as an Oscar), a Tony Award, a BAFTA Award, and two Olivier Awards. These awards celebrate his amazing work in both movies and plays.

Eddie Redmayne started his acting career in theatre, performing in plays in London's famous West End. Some of his early roles included The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia? (2004) and Red (2009–2010). For Red, he won an Olivier Award. He also performed on Broadway in New York, where he won a Tony Award for the same play. In 2022, he starred in a new version of the musical Cabaret in the West End, earning another Olivier Award. He brought Cabaret to Broadway in 2024, receiving a nomination for a Tony Award.

His first main role in a movie was in Like Minds (2006). He became widely known for playing Colin Clark in My Week with Marilyn (2011) and Marius Pontmercy in the musical film Les Misérables (2012). Redmayne won the Best Actor Oscar for his incredible portrayal of the scientist Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything (2014). He was also nominated for an Oscar for playing the pioneering artist Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl (2015). From 2016 to 2022, he starred as Newt Scamander in the popular Fantastic Beasts film series. He has also played Tom Hayden in The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020), Charles Cullen in The Good Nurse (2022), and a mysterious character called the "Jackal" in the TV series The Day of the Jackal (2024).

Early Life and Education

Edward John David Redmayne was born in Westminster, London, on 6 January 1982. His mother, Patricia, runs a business that helps people move homes, and his father, Richard, works in finance. His great-grandfather was a famous engineer named Sir Richard Redmayne. Eddie has an older brother, James, who is a cricketer, and a younger brother. He also has an older half-brother, Charlie, who is the CEO of a big publishing company called HarperCollins.

From the age of 10, Eddie attended the Jackie Palmer Stage School. This is where he discovered his love for acting and singing. He went to school at Eaton House, Colet Court, and then Eton College. Interestingly, he was in the same year at Eton as Prince William. After Eton, he studied History of Art at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated in 2003. He even received a special scholarship for his singing ability at Cambridge.

Career

Stage Performances

Eddie Redmayne's first professional stage role was in 2002, playing Viola in Twelfth Night at Shakespeare's Globe. In 2004, he won an award for "Outstanding Newcomer" at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards for his performance in The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?. Critics praised his intense acting in the play.

In 2009, Redmayne starred in a new play called Red in London. He played a character named Ken. For this role, he won the 2010 Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. A famous critic from The New York Times said that Eddie was "a star in the making." He then took the play to Broadway in New York, where he won a Tony Award for his performance.

From 2011 to 2012, he played King Richard II in the play Richard II. He received another award for his excellent performance in a Shakespearean play. Critics said he brought a lot of emotion and depth to the role.

In 2021, Eddie returned to the stage to play the Emcee in a new production of the musical Cabaret in London. He had played this role before when he was 17! He worked with actress Jessie Buckley and director Rebecca Frecknall to create the show. The play received fantastic reviews, with many calling Eddie's performance "thrilling" and "a marvel." The show won seven awards at the 2022 Olivier Awards, including Best Musical Revival and Best Actor in a Musical for Eddie. In 2024, the show moved to Broadway, and Eddie was nominated for a Tony Award for his role.

Screen Performances

Eddie Redmayne first appeared on screen in 1998 in a TV show called Animal Ark. He also acted in TV miniseries like Tess of the d'Urbervilles, The Pillars of the Earth, and Birdsong. His performance as a World War I soldier in Birdsong was described as "mesmerising" and "astonishing."

His first major movie role was in Like Minds (2006). He also appeared in films such as The Good Shepherd (2006), The Other Boleyn Girl (2008), and Black Death (2010).

In 2011, Eddie starred as Colin Clark in My Week with Marilyn. The next year, he played Marius Pontmercy in the movie musical Les Misérables, which was very popular.

In 2014, Eddie Redmayne played the brilliant scientist Stephen Hawking in the movie The Theory of Everything. For this amazing role, he won the Oscar, a BAFTA, a Golden Globe, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actor. Stephen Hawking himself was very impressed, saying, "I thought Eddie Redmayne portrayed me very well. At times I thought he was me."

In 2015, Eddie starred in Jupiter Ascending. Later that year, he played Lili Elbe, a pioneering transgender artist, in the biographical drama The Danish Girl. His performance received high praise, and he earned his second Oscar nomination in a row for this role.

In 2016, Eddie Redmayne took on the role of Newt Scamander in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. This movie is part of the Wizarding World, which is connected to the Harry Potter series. The film was a big success. He continued to play Newt Scamander in the sequels, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018) and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022). These Fantastic Beasts movies are some of his highest-earning films.

In 2020, Eddie starred as Tom Hayden in The Trial of the Chicago 7. The cast of this film won a Screen Actors Guild Award for their excellent teamwork. In 2022, he played Charles Cullen in The Good Nurse, a role that critics found "eerie" and "magnetic."

In 2024, he starred in and produced the TV series The Day of the Jackal. He played a mysterious British assassin. His performance was highly praised, with one critic saying he found "a new way of acting" by conveying so much with little dialogue.

Personal Life

Eddie Redmayne married Hannah Bagshawe on 15 December 2014. They have two children, a daughter and a son.

In 2015, Eddie was given the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by the Queen for his contributions to drama.

He is also involved with several charities. Since 2015, he has been a patron of the Motor Neurone Disease Association, a charity that helps people with the same condition as Stephen Hawking. He is also an ambassador for the Teenage Cancer Trust and Go Live Theatre Projects, which helps children and young people experience theatre.
