Thomas & Friends: Sodor's Legend of the Lost Treasure is a fun animated movie from 2015. It's the ninth special film in the popular Thomas & Friends series.
This movie features many talented voice actors. Joseph May and John Hasler voice Thomas in the US and UK versions. Other stars include Olivia Colman, Keith Wickham, and Eddie Redmayne. You'll also hear Sir John Hurt and Jamie Campbell Bower.
This film is special because it introduces three new engines: Rex, Bert, and Mike. They are small engines from the The Railway Series books by Reverend Wilbert Awdry. Before this movie, they had never appeared in the TV show. Some older characters who hadn't been seen for a while also make a return.
You might even spot a computer-generated version of Wilbert Awdry himself in the movie! The film was shown in cinemas in the UK and Australia. In other places, it was released directly on DVD. Most critics liked the movie, praising its story and direction.
What Happens in the Movie?
The story begins with Thomas the Tank Engine racing Bertie the bus. Bertie complains about all the construction work for a new railway line. Meanwhile, Marion the steam shovel meets Oliver and his brakevan Toad. They are at Arlesdale Junction, where they meet Mike, Bert, and Rex for the first time. These miniature engines are helping deliver materials for the new line.
One morning, Thomas accidentally causes Gordon the Big Engine's express train to go off the tracks. Thomas tries to blame other engines. But Sir Topham Hatt knows Thomas is responsible. As a punishment, Thomas loses his branch line. A new engine named Ryan takes over. Thomas is sent to work at the construction site for the new line. Gordon is very happy about this!
At the construction yard, Thomas feels sad. Mike, Rex, and Bert sing to cheer him up. Later, Thomas drives over an unsafe part of the track. It breaks, and Thomas falls into a big hole. He is badly damaged. Inside the hole, he sees an old, abandoned pirate ship! When Rocky the crane pulls Thomas out, Thomas tries to tell Sir Topham Hatt about the ship. But Sir Topham Hatt doesn't believe him.
While Thomas is being fixed, he learns that Rocky found a ship in the cavern. Thomas is upset because Rocky gets all the credit. Donald and Douglas, the Scottish twin engines, are asked to take the ship to the harbor. A mysterious man watches them. That evening, Henry the Green Engine sees a ghostly sailboat on the tracks.
The next day, Ryan starts working on the new branch line. Percy the Small Engine takes over Thomas's old line. That night, Thomas wakes up and follows the sailboat Henry saw. Outside the sinkhole, Thomas meets Sailor John and his sailboat, Skiff. Thomas agrees to help them find treasure. He lowers Sailor John into the cavern, where they find a map.
Later, sparks from Ryan's funnel accidentally light some dynamite. Thomas quickly pushes the trucks of dynamite into the cavern. It explodes safely inside. Everyone congratulates Thomas for saving them. But Sir Topham Hatt thinks Thomas was playing with the dynamite. He refuses to listen to Thomas's explanation. Thomas is sent to his shed as punishment.
The construction workers can't continue without dynamite. Marion then finds a chest in the cliffside. That night, Thomas helps Sailor John search for the treasure again. They don't find anything at first. Then, Thomas bumps into Marion, who drops the chest. It opens, revealing the treasure! Marion is praised for finding it. Ryan goes to get more dynamite. Thomas is sent to take rubbish to the dump.
Passing through Knapford, Thomas overhears Sir Topham Hatt. He says the treasure will be in his office overnight. Back at the construction yard, Ryan apologizes to Thomas. He offers Thomas a place to sleep. But Thomas decides to sleep near Knapford station. He thinks Sailor John will try to steal the treasure.
That night, Thomas waits outside the station. Sailor John blows up the safe and takes the treasure. The explosion wakes Thomas, who chases them. Thomas finds the pirate ship, which John has turned into an escape vehicle. It's tied to Skiff. Mike, Rex, Bert, and Ryan help Thomas derail the pirate ship. But John and Skiff keep going towards the harbor.
As the sun rises, Thomas is still chasing them. Skiff encourages Thomas to derail him. Thomas accidentally sends Skiff down the wrong line. But Thomas realizes his line crosses Skiff's, which leads to the sea! Thomas slips into the water and lands on Skiff's base. Sailor John sails away, even though Skiff asks him to throw off the heavy treasure. A huge wave then sinks the treasure to the bottom of the sea.
Later that morning, the police arrive and arrest Sailor John. Thomas is worried Sir Topham Hatt is still angry with him. He tries to admit his mistakes. But Sir Topham Hatt is proud of Thomas's bravery. Ryan had explained everything. Thomas is sad he couldn't save the treasure. But Sir Topham Hatt tells him his engines are more important than any treasure.
Finally, the construction is finished! Sir Topham Hatt announces that the new branch line will belong to Ryan and Daisy the diesel railcar. Thomas, now fully repaired, cuts the ribbon. He leads the other engines down the new line. They meet Skiff again, who now gives boat tours to visitors. Divers are also working to recover the lost treasure.
