Sir Topham Hatt: The Railway Boss

  • Sir Topham Hatt is the boss of the North Western Railway on Sodor. He is also known as "The Fat Controller". He makes sure all the trains run on time and that everyone is working well. Sometimes, he even drives the engines himself! When he was younger, he drove a steam lorry named Elizabeth. Sir Topham Hatt is very smart and often comes up with clever plans to solve problems. He has two famous sayings: "You are a really useful engine!" when an engine does a great job, and "You have caused confusion and delay!" when things go wrong.

Lady Hatt and Family

  • Lady Hatt is Sir Topham Hatt's wife. She is very kind to all the engines. Even though her husband runs a railway, she enjoys trips on boats or in their car.
  • Stephen Hatt is Sir Topham and Lady Hatt's grandson. He is Bridget Hatt's brother.
  • Bridget Hatt is Sir Topham and Lady Hatt's granddaughter. She is Stephen Hatt's sister.

Important Sodor Residents

  • Farmer Finney drives Terence the tractor. He owns a big farm near Hackenbeck. His name was first mentioned in a story in 1996.
  • Mrs. Kyndley is an older lady who lives in a small house near Hackenback Tunnel. Once, she saved Thomas' train from crashing by waving a bright red dress. This was after an avalanche blocked the railway line near her home. Sir Topham Hatt was so thankful that he paid for her to go on a trip to get better. Later, the engines even threw her a Christmas party!
  • Jem Cole is Trevor the traction engine's driver. He helped save Trevor from being scrapped. Jem Cole loves old vehicles and also fixes other machines on Sodor. He even helped rescue a lost engine named Duke.
  • The Reverend is a vicar who lives at the Vicarage near Edward's Branch Line. He bought Trevor the traction engine to save him from being scrapped. The Vicar often holds fun events like Sunday School outings and garden parties. He keeps bees and sometimes gives honey to his friends.
  • Farmer Trotter owns a pig farm. He also keeps bees and herds sheep. Sometimes, Jem Cole, Terence, and Trevor help him with work on his farm.
  • The Refreshment Lady sells tea and snacks to passengers on the Narrow Gauge Railway. She has a shop called "Neptune's Refreshments." She once got a new mobile shop thanks to Peter Sam, who helped restore an old coach for her.
  • Nancy is a guard's daughter who lives near the Skarloey Railway. She sometimes helps by polishing the engines.
  • Tom Tipper is a postman who delivers mail in the area of Callan.
  • Dowager Hatt is Sir Topham Hatt's elderly mother. She is Stephen and Bridget's great-grandmother. She visits Sodor often. On one visit, her Dalmatian dog got scared and hid in Thomas's cab. She decided to call the dog "Gremlin" because of all the problems that happened that day.
  • Old Bailey is a fogman and the stationmaster at Hawin Lake. He also works at the Blue Mountain Quarry.
  • Cyril is another fogman who lives in Misty Valley. When it's foggy, he places special detonators on the tracks. These make a loud bang to warn engines about the fog. He once saved the day when a foghorn caused a landslide.
  • Jenny Packard is often called Miss Jenny. She is an Irish woman who owns and leads the Sodor Construction Company. Her machines, known as "The Pack," are friendly and often work with the railway.
  • The Foreman is Miss Jenny's second-in-command at the Sodor Construction Company.
  • Farmer McColl lives and works on a farm with many animals like cows, chickens, sheep, and pigs. When the weather is bad, engines like Toby and Emily help him keep his animals safe.
  • Allicia Botti is a very famous opera singer from Italy. Thomas was chosen to take her to a concert. However, she chose Percy instead after finding a mouse in her coach!
  • The Sodor Brass Band are musicians who come to Sodor to perform. The engines enjoy taking them to different places, like Lady Hatt's birthday party or the Sodor Circus. The band has six members who play instruments like the trumpet and tuba.
  • The Duke and Duchess of Boxford visit Sodor regularly. They own their own private engine, Spencer. They even bought a holiday home on the Island.
  • Lord Callan is a Scottish lord who owns Callan Castle and the land around it.
  • Mr. Peregrine Percival is the boss of the Skarloey Railway. The engines sometimes call him "The Thin Controller." He is often seen riding his bike.
  • The Mayor of Sodor is in charge of the whole Island. He first appeared in the ninth series of the show.
  • Sir Lowham Hatt is Sir Topham Hatt's cheerful twin brother.
  • Mr. Bubbles is a famous clown known for blowing huge bubbles and performing with big balloons.

  • Sir Robert Norramby is the Earl of Sodor. He owns several railway engines, including Stephen, Millie, and Glynn, and Ulfstead Castle. He returned to Sodor after traveling the world to restore Ulfstead Castle and open it as a fun place for visitors.
  • Captain Joe is the current owner of Skiff the railboat. He is also the lighthouse keeper at Arlesburgh Harbour. He and Skiff once helped the people of Arlesburgh get ready for a big storm.
  • Mr. Fergus Duncan is the boss of the Arlesdale Railway. He is also known as "The Small Controller." He is actually taller than Sir Topham Hatt!
  • The Thin Clergyman writes books. He is based on Wilbert Awdry, who created Thomas & Friends.
  • The Fat Clergyman takes photographs. He is based on Edwin Boston.
  • Willie is a farmer and tractor driver who works near the Arlesdale Railway.

DVD Live-Action Segments

  • Mr. Arkwright was one of the drivers on Sodor and Sir Topham Hatt's helper. In live-action videos, he would ask viewers to help him with projects, like making an engine from cardboard boxes. His office was at Knapford Station.
  • Mr. Gilbert Perkins is a driver on Sodor and a good friend of Sir Topham Hatt. He appeared in videos showing viewers how to make crafts, like a cake that looked like Thomas. He also read Railway Series stories and wrote postcards.
