Early Life and Education
Stephanie Beatriz was born in Neuquén, Argentina, on February 10, 1981. Her father is from Colombia, and her mother is from Bolivia. She also has some German family background. When she was two years old, she moved to the United States with her parents and younger sister.
Stephanie grew up in Webster, Texas, which is near Houston. She went to Clear Brook High School. When she was a child, her mother often took her and her sister to art shows and events. Stephanie says this helped her realize she could have a job in the arts. She became interested in acting after taking a speech and debate class, which let her perform in plays. When she was 18, she became a citizen of the United States.
After high school, Stephanie went to Stephens College, an all-women's school in Missouri. She graduated in 2002 and then moved to New York City to start her acting career. Since 2010, she has lived in Los Angeles.
Acting Career Highlights
Stephanie Beatriz has performed in many plays and TV shows.
Early Roles and TV Shows
She spent three seasons acting at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. She played characters like Catherine in A View From a Bridge and Maggie in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.
On television, she had small parts in police shows like The Closer and Southland. She also had a repeating role as Sonia Ramirez, Gloria's sister, in the comedy series Modern Family.
Breakthrough with Brooklyn Nine-Nine
In 2013, Stephanie began her most famous role as Detective Rosa Diaz in the comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine. This show was about a group of police officers in Brooklyn. She played Rosa for eight seasons, until 2021. In 2019, she even directed an episode of the show called "He Said, She Said".
Film and Voice Acting
Stephanie also starred in the independent film The Light of the Moon in 2017. Critics praised her acting in the movie.
She is also well-known for her voice acting. From 2018 to 2019, she was the voice of Gina Cazador on the show BoJack Horseman. She also voiced General Sweet Mayhem in The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part.
In 2019, it was announced that Stephanie would be in the 2021 movie In the Heights, which is based on a popular musical. In the same year, she voiced Mirabel Madrigal, the main character in the Disney animated movie Encanto. This was her second time working with Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote the music for both In the Heights and Encanto.
More recently, since 2024, Stephanie has been the voice of Vaggie in the animated musical series Hazbin Hotel. She has also voiced characters in podcasts like Tejana and Solar.
Personal Life Facts
Stephanie Beatriz has a condition called astigmatism, which means she needs glasses to see clearly. She often does not wear her glasses in her acting roles, and contact lenses can bother her eyes. This can make it a bit tricky for her to find her exact spots on set while filming.
In October 2017, Stephanie announced she was engaged to actor Brad Hoss. They got married on October 6, 2018. In June 2021, she shared that she was expecting a baby, and her daughter was born in August 2021.
