Early Life and First Steps in Acting
Christopher Michael Pratt was born on June 21, 1979, in Virginia, Minnesota. His mom worked at a supermarket, and his dad worked in mining and later fixed houses. When Chris was seven, his family moved to Lake Stevens, Washington.
In high school, Chris was a good wrestler and a shot putter for his track team. He once told his wrestling coach, "I don't know what I'll do, but I know I'll be famous and make a lot of money!" He graduated from Lake Stevens High School in 1997.
After high school, Chris left community college and worked as a ticket salesman. He even spent some time living in a van and a tent on a beach in Maui, Hawaii. He said it was "a pretty awesome place to be homeless." While there, he worked for a Christian missionary group.
When Chris was 19, he was waiting tables at a restaurant in Maui. That's when actress and director Rae Dawn Chong discovered him! She cast him in her short horror film, Cursed Part 3. This was his very first acting job.
Becoming a Star
Early TV Roles and Big Break
Chris Pratt's first regular TV role was as Harold Brighton "Bright" Abbott on the series Everwood. After that show ended, he joined the cast of The O.C. for its fourth season. He also had a small part in the 2008 action movie Wanted.

In 2009, Chris started playing Andy Dwyer on the NBC comedy series Parks and Recreation. Andy was only supposed to be a temporary character, but the producers loved Chris so much that they asked him to stay on the show full-time. This role became his big breakthrough!
In 2011, Chris played Scott Hatteberg, a baseball player, in the movie Moneyball. He had to work very hard to get in shape for the role. Before Moneyball, Chris was often cast as young and funny characters. But in this movie, he played a serious role as a father and a baseball player learning a new position.
He then gained weight for the film 10 Years, and then lost it again to play a Navy SEAL in the movie Zero Dark Thirty (2012). He also appeared in Spike Jonze's sci-fi romance Her in 2013.
Blockbuster Movies and Worldwide Fame
2014 was a huge year for Chris Pratt! He starred in two major movies. He voiced Emmet Brickowski in The Lego Movie, which was a massive hit. Then, he played Peter Quill / Star-Lord in Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy. He had initially turned down the role of Star-Lord, but the director, James Gunn, was convinced Chris was perfect for it. This role was part of a big deal Chris signed with Marvel.
In 2015, Chris, who was a big fan of the original Jurassic Park movie, became the lead in Jurassic World. He played Owen Grady, a character who trains Velociraptors. Jurassic World was incredibly successful, earning over $1.6 billion worldwide! People loved his performance. He returned as Owen Grady in the sequel, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, in 2018, and again in Jurassic World Dominion in 2022.

His other movies include The Magnificent Seven (2016), a Western film where he starred with Denzel Washington. He also starred in the science fiction movie Passengers (2016) with Jennifer Lawrence.
Chris continued to play Peter Quill/Star-Lord in the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017). He also appeared as Star-Lord in the huge Marvel movies Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019).
He voiced Emmet again in The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019), and also voiced a new character named Rex Dangervest. In 2020, he had a main voice role in the Disney/Pixar animated movie Onward with his Avengers co-star Tom Holland.
