Early Life and Music Start
Edie Brickell grew up in Dallas, Texas. She attended a special school for performing and visual arts. Later, she studied at Southern Methodist University. But she soon decided to focus on her passion: songwriting and music.
Edie Brickell & New Bohemians
In 1985, Edie was invited to sing with a local folk rock group called New Bohemians. She quickly became their lead singer. When the band signed a record deal, their name changed to Edie Brickell & New Bohemians.
Their first album, Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars, came out in 1988. It was a huge hit! The album included the popular song "What I Am". Their next album, Ghost of a Dog (1990), showed more of the band's unique style. Edie became known for making up lyrics on the spot during performances. She said it was just "strange thoughts" always running through her head.
The band continued to make music over the years. They released Stranger Things in 2006. In 2018, they announced their album Rocket. Their fifth studio album, Hunter and the Dog Star, came out in 2021.
Edie's Solo Music and Other Projects
Edie Brickell also worked on her own music. She was in the 1989 movie Born on the Fourth of July as a folk singer. Her version of Bob Dylan's "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall" was on the film's soundtrack.
As a solo artist, she released albums like Picture Perfect Morning (1994) and Volcano (2003). A music video for her song "Good Times" was even included on a Microsoft Windows 95 CD-ROM!
The Gaddabouts
In 2010, Edie helped start a new band called The Gaddabouts. She was the lead singer and played guitar. The band released albums like The Gaddabouts (2011) and Look Out Now! (2012).
Working with Steve Martin
Edie Brickell also teamed up with famous actor and musician Steve Martin. They released an album together called Love Has Come for You in 2013. They even went on TV shows to promote it.
They toured North America with Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers. In 2016, a musical called Bright Star opened on Broadway. Edie helped write the music, lyrics, and story for it.
In 2017, Edie and Steve Martin appeared in a documentary film. They recorded an old English folk song called "The Coo Coo Bird". They used a special old recording system from the 1920s!
Heavy MakeUp
More recently, in 2023, Edie became the lead singer of a new band called Heavy MakeUp. This band mixes vocals, synth, brass, and drum machines. They released their first album in 2023 and a second one in 2024.
Edie's Personal Life
Edie Brickell married singer-songwriter Paul Simon on May 30, 1992. It's a sweet story how they met! Edie was performing "What I Am" on Saturday Night Live in 1988.
