Georges Dor's Early Life
Georges Dor was born as Georges-Henri Dore in Drummondville, a city in Quebec. He grew up in a big family. When he was young, he worked in a factory. He also studied acting and theatre at a special school in Montréal called the École du Théâtre du Nouveau Monde.
Starting in Radio
Georges Dor began his career working in radio. He was a disk jockey, playing music and talking on the air. He also directed the news programs. In the 1950s, he worked at a radio station called CHLN in Trois-Rivières. Starting in 1957, he joined Radio-Canada, which is Canada's national public broadcaster. There, he became a director for the Evening News.
Becoming a Singer and Songwriter
Georges Dor wrote poems for many years. In 1964, his friends encouraged him to try out for a singing competition for new artists. He started singing professionally in early 1965. His first music album was released in 1966.
One of the songs from this album became very famous. It was called "La Manic." The words of the song were like a love letter written by a construction worker. This worker was building a big power project at the Manicouagan Reservoir. "La Manic" became the most popular song ever by a Quebec chansonnier (a singer-songwriter). It even won an award called the Felix Leclerc award in 1968. Other songs by Georges Dor that were also successful include "Une boîte à chanson" (which means "A Music Box") and "Pour la musique" (meaning "For Music").
Later Work in Theatre and Television
Georges Dor continued to perform as a singer until 1972. He kept recording music until 1978. After that, he focused mostly on theatre and television. He wrote and produced plays for the stage. He also wrote téléromans, which are long-running TV dramas popular in Quebec. Besides his work in entertainment, he wrote two novels and published several collections of his poetry.
