The Mayor and Governor of Vienna is a very important job! This person leads the city of Vienna, which is the capital city of Austria. Since 1920, Vienna has also been its own special state within Austria. This means the person who is Mayor of the city is also the Landeshauptmann, or governor, of the state of Vienna. It's like being the boss of both the city and the state at the same time!
The current Mayor and Governor of Vienna is Michael Ludwig. He has been in this role since May 24, 2018.

A Look Back: Vienna's First Mayors
Vienna has had mayors for a very long time, going all the way back to 1282! In those early days, Vienna was part of a larger area called the Duchy and later Archduchy of Austria. The first known mayor was Konrad Poll, who started his job in 1282.
For hundreds of years, many different people served as mayor. They helped guide Vienna through many changes and challenges.
Mayors During the Habsburg Monarchy
From the 1500s, Vienna was a very important city in the Habsburg Monarchy. This was a powerful royal family that ruled over many lands in Europe. Mayors during this time continued to manage the city's daily life and growth. They worked with the emperors and empresses to keep Vienna running smoothly.
Leading Vienna Through Modern Times
As Austria changed, so did the role of Vienna's mayor. During the Austrian Empire and later Austria-Hungary, the mayors helped Vienna become a large and modern European city. They oversaw big projects and helped manage the city's growing population.
After World War I, Austria became a republic. This was a big change! The mayors of Vienna continued to play a key role in rebuilding and shaping the city.
Vienna Becomes Its Own State
A very important change happened in 1922. The city of Vienna officially became its own separate state within Austria. Before this, it was just the capital of a larger state called Lower Austria.
This meant that the person elected as Mayor of Vienna also became the Landeshauptmann (state governor). So, from 1922 onwards, the leader of Vienna has two big jobs: running the city and leading the state.
Mayors and Governors of the Second Austrian Republic
After World War II, Austria became the Second Austrian Republic. Since then, Vienna has had many mayors and governors who have helped it become the vibrant city it is today. These leaders have worked to improve public transport, housing, education, and many other things that make Vienna a great place to live.
