Franz Josef Jonas (born October 4, 1899 – died April 24, 1974) was an important Austrian politician. He served as the President of Austria from 1965 until 1974. Before becoming president, he was the mayor of Vienna, the capital city of Austria.
Jonas was a typesetter by trade, which means he arranged text and images for printing. He was a member of the Social Democratic Party of Austria, a major political group.

Early Political Life
After World War II, Franz Jonas became active in the local politics of Vienna. He worked hard to help rebuild the city. His dedication led him to a very important role.
Mayor of Vienna
From 1951 to 1965, Franz Jonas was the Mayor and Governor of Vienna. During his time as mayor, he helped shape the city. A large tram station in Vienna, officially called Schottentor, was built when he was mayor. People in Vienna still call it Jonas-Reindl, which means "Jonas bowl," as a nickname.
President of Austria
In 1965, Franz Jonas was elected as the Federal President. This is the head of state for the country. He was re-elected for a second term in 1971.
A Special Interest: Esperanto
Franz Jonas was very keen on Esperanto. This is a language created to help people from different countries communicate easily. He started teaching Esperanto in 1923 and continued for many years. In 1970, the World Congress of Esperanto was held in Vienna. President Jonas gave his speech at this event entirely in Esperanto!
His Passing and Recognition
Franz Jonas passed away in 1974 while still in office. He was the fourth Austrian president in a row to die while serving. His contributions were recognized with several awards. In 1966, he received the Grand Cross of The Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav. In 1969, he was given the Pierre de Coubertin medal, which honors those who promote sports and fair play.
