Steven John Reid (born 10 March 1981) is a former professional footballer. He mostly played as a midfielder, but also as a right back.
Steven started his career at Millwall in 1998. Five years later, he moved to Blackburn Rovers. In 2010, after playing on loan, he joined West Bromwich Albion permanently. His career faced challenges due to injuries. Once, he famously played for 45 minutes against Arsenal with a broken leg! Steven retired from playing football in 2015 after a season with Burnley.
Even though he was born in England, Steven played for the Republic of Ireland. He played 23 times for them and scored two goals between 2001 and 2008. He was also part of their team at the 2002 FIFA World Cup. After retiring as a player, Steven became a coach for several football clubs.

Playing Career
Starting at Millwall
Steven Reid was born in Kingston upon Thames, London. He began his football journey at Millwall. He made his first professional appearance in the 1997–98 season when he was just 17 years old.
He was part of the successful Millwall team that won promotion to the English First Division in the 2000–01 season. Steven became known for his powerful runs and amazing long-range shots. A memorable moment was when he scored from 35 yards against Norwich City, helping Millwall win 4–0. While playing for Millwall, he also earned his first chance to play for the Republic of Ireland national team. His strong performances led to him joining Blackburn Rovers in July 2003.
Time at Blackburn Rovers
Steven Reid played his first game for Blackburn Rovers on 23 August 2003. He came on as a substitute but was unfortunately sent off (given a red card) just before the end of the game. He played 19 games in his first season, but a hamstring injury kept him out for three months.
When Mark Hughes became Blackburn's manager in September 2004, Steven's role changed. Even though he mostly played as a wide midfielder, Hughes moved him to centre midfield. Steven played brilliantly in this new position, helping Blackburn win 1–0 against Everton. He then often played in central midfield.
In the 2005–06 Premier League season, Steven scored one of the best goals of the year against Wigan. He hit a volley from 30 yards right into the top corner of the net. This goal won the BBC Match of the Day's Goal of the Month award for December. On 2 May 2006, Steven scored a header against Chelsea that secured Blackburn's spot in the 2006–07 UEFA Cup, a big European competition.
Steven faced many injuries during his time at Blackburn. He missed most of the 2006–07 season due to a back injury and then a serious knee injury. His injury problems continued, causing him to miss the entire 2008–09 season. In November 2009, he went on loan to Queens Park Rangers (QPR) to try and get back to full fitness.
Moving to West Bromwich Albion
On 5 March 2010, West Bromwich Albion signed Steven Reid on a one-month loan. He played his first game for them against his former loan club, QPR. He scored his first goal for West Brom against Coventry City later that month.
On 26 May 2010, Steven joined West Brom permanently after they were promoted to the Premier League. He signed a two-year contract. He scored his first goal as a permanent player for the club against Leicester City in the League Cup.
At the start of the 2011–12 season, Steven scored an own goal against Manchester United. However, he soon became West Brom's main right back. He scored his first goal of that season from a free-kick against Wigan in December 2011. After an ankle injury in March 2012, he missed the rest of the season. While recovering, Steven signed a new two-year deal to stay at West Brom until 2014.
Final Playing Season at Burnley
After leaving West Bromwich Albion at the end of the 2013–14 season, Steven thought about becoming a coach. However, his former Millwall teammate, Sean Dyche, who was managing newly promoted Burnley, asked him to play for them. Steven decided to keep playing and signed a one-year contract with Burnley.
On 18 May 2015, after Burnley was relegated (moved down a league), Steven announced that he would retire from playing football at the end of the season. He then planned to start a coaching career.
International Career
Even though Steven Reid played for England at younger levels, he chose to play for the Republic of Ireland. He was able to do this because his grandfather was born in County Galway, Ireland. He was part of the Irish team that went to the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
Steven was chosen as the captain for the Republic of Ireland football team in a friendly match against the Netherlands on 16 August 2006.
He retired from international football on 13 July 2010 to focus on his club career. However, he later said he might return if Ireland needed help in midfield.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Steven Reid began his coaching journey. On 25 June 2015, he became a first-team coach at Championship club Reading. He left this role in July 2017 to look for new challenges.
In September of that year, he joined Crystal Palace in the same coaching position. He left Crystal Palace the following August, as he wanted to take some time away from football for personal reasons. He then briefly coached at AFC Wimbledon before leaving in December 2018.
On 18 April 2019, Steven returned to West Bromwich Albion to help caretaker manager Jimmy Shan. He worked there until the end of the 2018–19 season. In May 2019, he joined Steve Clarke's coaching staff for the Scotland national team.
Steven left his role with Scotland in August 2021 to become a first-team coach at Nottingham Forest. On 16 September 2021, he was appointed Interim Manager of Nottingham Forest for a short time after the previous manager was dismissed.
In October 2022, Steven shared that he had left his job as Nottingham Forest assistant manager. He wanted to study and become a counsellor, focusing on mental health in football.
In July 2023, Nottingham Forest announced that Steven had returned to the club as a first-team coach. However, in September 2024, he left Nottingham Forest for a second time.
