Steven John Reid (born 10 March 1981) is a former professional footballer from England. He mostly played as a midfielder but also as a right back.

Steven started his football journey with Millwall in 1998. Five years later, he moved to Blackburn Rovers. After a short loan, he joined West Bromwich Albion in 2010. Steven's career faced challenges due to injuries. He once played for 45 minutes with a broken leg against Arsenal! He stopped playing in 2015 after a season with Burnley.

Even though he was born in England, Steven played for the Republic of Ireland. He played 23 games for them and scored two goals between 2001 and 2008. He was also part of their team for the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

Playing Career: Steven Reid's Journey

Starting Out at Millwall

Steven Reid was born in Kingston upon Thames, London. He began his football career at Millwall. He played his first professional game in the 1997–98 season when he was just 17.

He was part of the successful Millwall team that won promotion to the English First Division in the 2000–01 season. Steven became known for his powerful runs and amazing long-range shots. One memorable goal was from 35 yards against Norwich City. This goal helped Millwall win 4–0 on the first day of the 2001–02 season. While at Millwall, he also earned his first chance to play for Ireland. His great performances led to him joining Blackburn Rovers in July 2003.

Time at Blackburn Rovers

Steven made his first appearance for Blackburn Rovers on 23 August 2003. He came on as a substitute but was unfortunately sent off just before the game ended. He played 19 games in his first season, but a hamstring injury kept him out for three months.

In September 2004, Mark Hughes became Blackburn's new manager. This change also meant a new role for Steven. Even though he had mostly played as a wide midfielder, Hughes moved him to centre midfield. Steven played brilliantly in this new position, helping Blackburn win 1–0 against Everton in March 2005. He then often played in central midfield.

Steven scored one of the best goals of the 2005–06 season against Wigan. He hit a volley from 30 yards right into the top corner of the net. This goal won the BBC Match of the Day's Goal of the Month award for December. On 2 May 2006, Steven scored a header that secured Blackburn's spot in the 2006–07 UEFA Cup, a big European competition.

Unfortunately, Steven missed most of the 2006–07 season due to injuries. He had a back injury and then a serious knee injury that kept him out for the rest of the season. His injury problems continued, causing him to miss the entire 2008–09 season as well.

In November 2009, Steven joined Queens Park Rangers (QPR) on a short loan to try and get back to playing regularly after his injuries.

Moving to West Bromwich Albion

On 5 March 2010, West Bromwich Albion signed Steven on a one-month loan. He played his first game for them as a right back against his former loan club, QPR. He scored his first goal for West Brom against Coventry City later that month.

On 26 May 2010, Steven joined West Brom permanently after they were promoted to the Premier League. He signed a two-year contract. He scored his first goal as a permanent player against Leicester City in the League Cup in October 2010.

At the start of the 2011–12 season, Steven scored an own goal in a game against Manchester United. However, as the season went on, he became the main right back for the team. He scored his first goal of that season from a free-kick against Wigan in December 2011. After a match against Chelsea in March 2012, Steven injured his ankle ligaments and missed the rest of the season. While recovering, he signed a new two-year deal with West Brom.

Final Season at Burnley

After leaving West Bromwich Albion at the end of the 2013–14 season, Steven thought about becoming a coach. However, his former Millwall teammate Sean Dyche, who was managing newly promoted Burnley, asked him to play for them. Steven decided to keep playing and signed a one-year contract with Burnley.

On 18 May 2015, after Burnley was relegated, Steven announced that he would retire from playing football at the end of the season. He then planned to start a coaching career.

International Football: Playing for Ireland

Even though Steven played for England's junior teams, he chose to play for the Republic of Ireland. He could do this because his grandfather was born in County Galway, Ireland. He was chosen to be part of the Irish team for the 2002 FIFA World Cup as a late addition.

Steven was made the captain of the Republic of Ireland team for a friendly match against the Netherlands on 16 August 2006.

He retired from international football on 13 July 2010 to focus on his club career. However, he later said he might return if Ireland needed help in midfield.

Coaching Career: After Playing

After retiring from playing, Steven Reid moved into coaching.

On 25 June 2015, he became a first-team coach at Championship club Reading. He left this role in July 2017 to look for new challenges.

In September of that year, he joined Crystal Palace in the same coaching position. Steven left Crystal Palace the following August, with the manager saying he wanted to take time away from football for personal reasons. He then briefly coached at AFC Wimbledon, leaving in December 2018.

On 18 April 2019, he returned to West Bromwich Albion to help the caretaker manager. He worked there until the end of the 2018–19 season. In May 2019, he joined Steve Clarke's coaching staff for the Scotland national team.

Steven left his role with Scotland in August 2021 to become a first-team coach at Nottingham Forest. On 16 September 2021, he was appointed Interim Manager of Nottingham Forest for a short time after the previous manager was dismissed.

In October 2022, Steven shared that he had left his job as Nottingham Forest's assistant manager. He wanted to study and become a counsellor, focusing on mental health in football.

In July 2023, Nottingham Forest announced that Steven Reid had returned to the club as a first-team coach. He left Nottingham Forest for a second time in September 2024.
