Sean Mark Dyche (born 28 June 1971) is an English football manager and former footballer. He was most recently the manager of the Premier League club Everton.

During his playing career, Dyche played as a centre-back, which is a defensive position in football. He started his professional career in 1990. He played for several clubs, including Chesterfield, where he was captain and scored in an FA Cup semi-final. He also played for Bristol City, Luton Town, Millwall, Watford, and Northampton Town. He helped three of his six clubs get promoted to a higher league.

After he stopped playing in 2007, he became a coach at Watford. He then became their manager from June 2011 to July 2012. After leaving Watford, Dyche became the manager of Burnley in October 2012. He led Burnley to the Premier League twice, in 2014 and 2016. In the 2017–18 season, he guided Burnley to play in a European competition for the first time since 1967. He was the longest-serving manager in the Premier League by the end of the 2019–20 season.

Burnley let him go in April 2022 when the club was in danger of being relegated. Dyche then joined Everton in January 2023. He was sacked by Everton two years later in January 2025.

Sean Dyche's Playing Days

Sean Dyche started his football journey as a young player at Nottingham Forest in the late 1980s. At that time, the famous Brian Clough was the manager. When he first joined Forest, he was shorter and lighter, but he grew taller and stronger after a year. Early in his career, he broke his leg, which he felt slowed down his progress. This injury also left a permanent bend in his leg.

He left Forest in early 1990 without playing for the first team. He then joined Chesterfield, where he later became the team captain. Dyche was part of the Chesterfield team that reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1997. In that semi-final match against Middlesbrough, he scored a penalty kick, putting his team 2–0 ahead. The game ended in a 3–3 draw, but Chesterfield lost the replay match 3–0.

In 1997, Dyche moved from Chesterfield to Bristol City. In his first season there, he helped them get promoted to Division One. The next season, Bristol City was relegated. During that time, Dyche also played for Luton Town on a temporary loan. After that, he joined Millwall. He helped Millwall get promoted to Division One in 2001. They almost made it to the Premier League the following year but lost in the play-offs.

In 2002, he started a three-year period at Watford, where he was the captain in his last season. Dyche then signed with Northampton Town in 2005. He helped them get promoted from League Two in the 2005–06 season. He was released from Northampton at the end of the 2006–07 season.

Sean Dyche's Managerial Career

After he stopped playing football, Sean Dyche returned to Watford in 2007. He started as the coach for the under-18s team. In July 2009, he became the assistant manager. When the manager left in June 2011, Dyche was promoted to manager of the first team. Watford finished the 2011–12 season in eleventh place in the Football League Championship. This was the club's best finish in four years. However, new owners took over the club, and Dyche was dismissed at the end of the season.

In October 2012, Sean Dyche became the manager of Burnley. Before the 2013–14 season began, many experts thought Burnley would be relegated. Dyche had to work with a small budget and a small team. Their best goal scorer from the previous season had also left.

However, in Dyche's first full season, Burnley finished second in the league. This meant they were promoted back to the Premier League. Two of their strikers, Danny Ings and Sam Vokes, scored 41 goals together. Dyche used only 23 players that season, which was one of the lowest numbers in the division. He also spent very little money on new players.

Burnley stayed in the top league for only one season before being relegated again. But in the next season, Burnley won the Championship title. They earned 93 points, just like in their previous promotion season. They also had an amazing run of 23 league games without losing.

In the 2016–17 season, Burnley finished 16th. This meant they would play in the top league for two seasons in a row, which was a first for them in the Premier League era. Dyche was also involved in designing the club's new training center. In January 2018, he signed a new contract to stay as Burnley's manager until 2022.

The season ended with Burnley qualifying for the UEFA Europa League. This was the first time they had played in a European competition in over 50 years. It was their best finish in the top league since the 1973–74 season. A local pub in Burnley was even renamed "The Royal Dyche" to honor him! Burnley was later knocked out of the Europa League by a Greek team called Olympiacos.

The 2019–20 season was stopped for three months because of the COVID-19 pandemic. When it restarted, games were played without fans. Burnley finished that season in 10th place. On 15 April 2022, Dyche was dismissed by Burnley after being with the club for nine and a half years. At that time, the club was in the relegation zone.

Managing Everton Football Club

On 30 January 2023, Sean Dyche was appointed manager of the Premier League club Everton. He signed a contract for two and a half years, taking over from Frank Lampard. In his very first game as manager, Everton beat Arsenal 1–0, who were leading the league at the time.

His time at Everton had mixed results. On the last day of the 2023 season, Everton needed a win to stay in the Premier League. They won their final match 1–0 against Bournemouth, which kept them in the top league.

However, the next season, Everton had 10 points taken away because they broke financial rules. This was later reduced to six points. Even with this penalty, the team managed to avoid relegation again, finishing in 15th place. On 24 April 2024, Dyche led his team to a 2–0 victory over their rivals Liverpool in the Merseyside derby. This was Everton's first home win against Liverpool since 2010.

On 9 January 2025, Dyche was sacked by Everton. This happened just hours before an FA Cup match. Everton had been getting poor results, winning only three of their last nineteen games in the 2024–25 season. Everton then brought back David Moyes as his replacement.

Sean Dyche's Personal Life

Sean Dyche was born in Kettering, England. When he was growing up, he admired Liverpool, but he was a supporter of his local team, Kettering Town. His father worked as a management consultant. Sean Dyche has two brothers. He is married to Jane and they have two children. His son, Max, also plays professional football for Northampton Town. Sean Dyche is also known for his unique, deep, and gravelly voice.
