Sean Mark Dyche (born 28 June 1971) is an English football manager and former footballer. He was most recently the manager of Premier League club Everton.

As a player, Dyche was a centre-back. He started his professional career in 1990. He played for several clubs, including Chesterfield, where he was captain. He even scored in an FA Cup semi-final for them. He also played for Bristol City, Luton Town, Millwall, Watford, and Northampton Town. He helped three of his six clubs get promoted to a higher league.

After he stopped playing in 2007, he became a coach at Watford. He then became their manager from June 2011 to July 2012. After leaving Watford, Dyche became the manager of Burnley in October 2012. He led Burnley to the Premier League twice, in 2014 and 2016. In the 2017–18 season, he guided Burnley to play in a European competition for the first time since 1967. This happened after they finished seventh in the league.

Dyche became the longest-serving manager in the Premier League by the end of the 2019–20 season. Burnley fired him in April 2022 when the team was struggling. Many people thought this was a bad decision. Dyche then became the manager of Everton in January 2023. He was dismissed from Everton in January 2025.

Playing Career Highlights

Sean Dyche started as a youth player at Nottingham Forest in the late 1980s. The famous manager Brian Clough was in charge then. Dyche grew a lot during his time there. He also broke his leg early in his career, which he felt slowed him down. He was also at the Hillsborough disaster as part of the Forest youth team.

Time at Chesterfield

Dyche left Forest in 1990 and joined Chesterfield. He later became the team captain. He was part of the Chesterfield team that reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1997. In that semi-final against Middlesbrough, he scored a penalty. The game ended in a 3–3 draw, but Chesterfield lost the replay.

Moving to Other Clubs

In 1997, Dyche moved to Bristol City. He helped them get promoted to Division One in his first season. The next season, Bristol City was relegated. During that time, Dyche played on loan for Luton Town.

He then joined Millwall in 1999. He helped them win promotion to Division One in 2001. They almost reached the Premier League the next year but lost in the play-offs. In 2002, he joined Watford and was their captain in his last season there.

Dyche signed with Northampton Town in 2005. He helped them get promoted from League Two in the 2005–06 season. He left the club at the end of the 2006–07 season.

Managerial Journey

After retiring as a player, Sean Dyche returned to Watford in 2007. He started as the under-18s coach. In July 2009, he became the assistant manager. When the manager left in June 2011, Dyche was promoted to manager. Watford finished 11th in the league in the 2011–12 season. This was their best finish in four years. However, new owners took over the club, and he was dismissed.

In September 2012, Dyche briefly worked with the England national under-21 football team. The next month, he became the manager of Burnley. Before the 2013–14 season, many thought Burnley would struggle. Dyche had a small budget and lost his top goal scorer. However, in his first full season, Burnley finished second and were promoted to the Premier League. The team's two main strikers scored 41 goals together. Dyche used only 23 players that season, which was very few.

Burnley stayed in the top league for only one season before being relegated. But the very next season, 2015–16, Burnley won the Championship title! They had a fantastic run of 23 league games without losing.

European Football and Club Growth

In the 2016–17 season, Burnley finished 16th, staying in the Premier League for a second year in a row. This was a first for them in the Premier League era. During 2017, Burnley built a new training center. Dyche helped design it and focused on the club's long-term future. In January 2018, he signed a new contract with Burnley. At that time, he had guided them to seventh place in the Premier League.

The 2017–18 season ended with Burnley qualifying for the UEFA Europa League. This was their first time in European football in over 50 years! It was their best league finish since 1973–74. A local pub in Burnley was even renamed "The Royal Dyche" in his honor. Burnley played in the Europa League qualifying rounds, beating teams from Scotland and Turkey. However, they were knocked out by a Greek team.

Leaving Burnley

The 2019–20 season was paused for three months because of the COVID-19 pandemic. When it restarted, games were played without fans. Burnley finished 10th that season. On 15 April 2022, Burnley dismissed Dyche after he had been with the club for nine and a half years. At the time, the club was in the relegation zone. Many people criticized the decision to fire him. Burnley was eventually relegated at the end of that season.

Managing Everton

On 30 January 2023, Dyche became the manager of Everton, a Premier League club. His first game in charge was a 1–0 win against Arsenal, who were leading the league at the time.

Everton's results under Dyche were mixed. On the final day of the 2022–23 season, Everton needed a win to stay in the Premier League. They won their last match 1–0 against Bournemouth, which kept them in the top league.

In the next season, Everton faced a challenge when they had 10 points deducted for breaking financial rules. This was later reduced to six points. Despite this, the team managed to avoid relegation again, finishing 15th. On 24 April 2024, Dyche's Everton team beat Liverpool 2–0 in the Merseyside derby. This was Everton's first home win against Liverpool since 2010.

On 9 January 2025, Everton dismissed Dyche. This happened just before an FA Cup match. Everton had been struggling, winning only three of their last nineteen games in the 2024–25 season. They were only one point above the relegation zone when he left. David Moyes then returned to manage the club.

Personal Life

Sean Dyche was born in Kettering, England. He grew up admiring Liverpool but supported his local team, Kettering Town. His father worked as a consultant for a steel company in different countries. Sean has two brothers. He is married to Jane and they have two children. His son, Max, is also a professional footballer for Northampton Town.
