The Premier of Tasmania is the leader of the government in the Australian state of Tasmania. Think of them as the chief executive, like a principal running a school, but for the whole state! They are in charge of making big decisions and leading the state's team.
The Premier is usually the leader of the political party or group that has the most support in the House of Assembly. This is the main part of Tasmania's parliament where laws are made. The Governor of Tasmania, who represents the King, officially asks this person to become Premier.
Since April 8, 2022, the Premier of Tasmania has been Jeremy Rockliff. He is the leader of the Liberal Party. His party currently holds 14 out of 35 seats in the House of Assembly.
What Does a Premier Do?
The Premier has many important jobs. They lead the state government and its team of ministers. These ministers are in charge of different areas like health, education, and transport. The Premier makes sure these areas run smoothly.
The Premier also works closely with the Governor. They advise the Governor on important state matters. This includes things like appointing judges or calling elections. The Premier's office is in the Executive Building in Hobart.
A Look Back at Tasmania's Premiers
The role of Premier in Tasmania began a long time ago, on November 1, 1856. The very first Premier was William Champ. In the early days, there weren't formal political parties like we have today. Leaders were often called "Independent."
For many years, some Premiers were chosen from the Legislative Council. This is another part of Tasmania's parliament. But by the late 1800s, it became the usual practice for the Premier to come from the House of Assembly. This is the part of parliament where people are directly elected by the public. The last Premier from the Legislative Council was Philip Fysh, who served from 1887 to 1892.
Over the years, many different people have held the job of Premier. Each one has helped shape Tasmania. They have made decisions that affected schools, hospitals, roads, and how people live. The Premier's job is always about serving the people of Tasmania.
