The coat of arms of Tasmania is the official symbol for the Australian state of Tasmania. It's like a special badge that represents the state. King George V officially gave it to Tasmania in May 1917.

This important symbol shows many things that are special about Tasmania. It has a shield with pictures of local industries. Above the shield is a red lion. Two thylacines, also known as Tasmanian tigers, stand on either side of the shield. Below them is a Latin motto that says Ubertas et Fidelitas. This means "Fertility and Faithfulness".

What is a Coat of Arms?

A coat of arms is a unique design that represents a country, state, family, or organization. It often includes a shield, a crest, and supporters. These symbols tell a story about the place or group they represent.

Symbols on the Tasmanian Coat of Arms

The Tasmanian coat of arms is full of interesting symbols. Each part tells us something about Tasmania.

The Shield

The main part of the coat of arms is the shield. It is divided into four sections. These sections show important parts of Tasmania's economy and nature:

  • A sheaf of wheat: This represents farming and agriculture.
  • Hops: These plants are used to make beer and show another important crop.
  • A ram: This symbolizes the sheep farming industry.
  • Apples: Tasmania is famous for its apples, often called the "Apple Isle."

The Crest

Above the shield is the crest. It features a red lion. This lion is also seen on the State Badge of Tasmania. The lion is standing with one paw resting on a spade and a pickaxe. These tools represent mining, which is another important industry in Tasmania.

The Supporters

On either side of the shield, you'll see two Tasmanian tigers. These animals are also called thylacines. They were native to Tasmania but are now sadly extinct. They are important symbols of Tasmania's unique wildlife.

The Motto

Below the shield is a ribbon with the motto Ubertas et Fidelitas. This is Latin for "Fertility and Faithfulness."

  • Fertility means that the land is rich and productive.
  • Faithfulness means being loyal and true.

Where You Can See It

The Tasmanian coat of arms is mostly used for official government purposes. You might see it on government buildings or official documents. Today, the government often uses a newer logo. This logo shows a Tasmanian tiger peeking through tall grass.
