Ancient Times and Middle Ages
- 70 AD – During the Siege of Jerusalem, Roman soldiers led by Titus broke through the city's second wall. The Jewish defenders moved back to the first wall. The Romans then built a huge wall around the city, cutting down all trees for about 15 kilometers (9 miles) around!
- 1381 – The Peasants' Revolt began in England. This was a big uprising by common people against the government.
- 1416 – Jerome of Prague was sadly burned at the stake for his beliefs after a trial for heresy.
- 1431 – During the Hundred Years' War, the brave 19-year-old Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in France by an English-controlled court. She is now a saint.
- 1434 – The Hussite Wars effectively ended with the Battle of Lipany. One group of Hussite forces defeated another, led by Prokop the Great.
- 1510 – A rebel leader named Zhu Zhifan was defeated, ending the Prince of Anhua rebellion in China during the Ming dynasty.
- 1536 – King Henry VIII of England married Jane Seymour. She was a lady-in-waiting to his first two wives.
- 1539 – In Florida, explorer Hernando de Soto landed at Tampa Bay with 600 soldiers. His goal was to find gold.
- 1574 – Henry III became the new King of France.
- 1588 – The last ship of the Spanish Armada left Lisbon. It was heading for the English Channel to try and invade England.

- 1631 – The first French newspaper, Gazette de France, was published.
- 1635 – The Peace of Prague was signed during the Thirty Years' War.
- 1723 – The famous composer Johann Sebastian Bach started his job as music director in Leipzig, Germany.
- 1806 – Andrew Jackson, who later became a U.S. President, won a duel against Charles Dickinson.
- 1814 – The First Treaty of Paris was signed. This treaty returned France's borders to how they were in 1792 and brought the House of Bourbon back to power.
- 1815 – The ship Arniston was wrecked in a storm near South Africa. Sadly, 372 lives were lost.
- 1842 – John Francis tried to attack Queen Victoria and Prince Albert while they were riding in London.
- 1845 – The ship Fatel Razack arrived in Trinidad and Tobago from India. It carried the first Indian people to the country.
- 1854 – The Kansas–Nebraska Act became law in the U.S. It created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska.
- 1866 – Bedrich Smetana's funny opera The Bartered Bride was first performed in Prague.
- 1868 – Decoration Day, which is now called Memorial Day, was first observed in the United States. It honors fallen soldiers.
- 1876 – Ottoman sultan Abdülaziz was removed from power. His nephew Murad V took his place.
- 1883 – A crowd stampede on the newly opened Brooklyn Bridge in New York City killed twelve people.
- 1899 – Pearl Hart, a female outlaw, robbed a stagecoach in Arizona.

- 1911 – The first Indianapolis 500 car race ended. Ray Harroun in his Marmon Wasp was the first winner of the 500-mile race.
- 1913 – The Treaty of London was signed, ending the First Balkan War. Albania became an independent nation.
- 1914 – The huge new Cunard ocean liner RMS Aquitania began her first journey from Liverpool, England, to New York City.
- 1922 – The Lincoln Memorial was officially opened in Washington, D.C.
- 1925 – During the May Thirtieth Movement, police in Shanghai shot and killed 13 protesting workers.
- 1937 – In the Memorial Day massacre, Chicago police shot and killed ten labor demonstrators.
- 1941 – World War II: Manolis Glezos and Apostolos Santas climbed the Athenian Acropolis and took down the German flag.
- 1942 – World War II: One thousand British bombers attacked Cologne, Germany, for 90 minutes.
- 1943 – The Holocaust: Josef Mengele became the chief medical officer of the Romani family camp at Auschwitz concentration camp.
- 1948 – A dike broke along the Columbia River, destroying Vanport, Oregon in minutes. Fifteen people died, and thousands lost their homes.
- 1958 – On Memorial Day, the remains of two unidentified American servicemen from World War II and the Korean War were buried at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery.

- 1998 – A strong earthquake in northern Afghanistan killed about 4,000–4,500 people.
- 1998 – Nuclear Testing: Pakistan conducted an underground nuclear test in the Kharan Desert.
- 2008 – The Convention on Cluster Munitions was adopted. This agreement bans certain types of weapons.
- 2012 – Former Liberian president Charles Taylor was sentenced to 50 years in prison for his role in the Sierra Leone Civil War.
- 2013 – Nigeria passed a law banning same-sex marriage.
- 2020 – The Crew Dragon Demo-2 launched from the Kennedy Space Center. This was the first time a crewed spacecraft launched from the United States since 2011, and the first commercial flight to the International Space Station.
