Emmanuel Célestin Suhard (5 April 1874 – 30 May 1949) was a French Cardinal in the Catholic Church. He served as the Archbishop of Paris from 1940 until he passed away. He became a Cardinal in 1935. He helped start the Mission of France and the worker-priest movement. These movements aimed to bring priests closer to everyday people.

Early Life and Education

Emmanuel Suhard was born in Brains-sur-les-Marches, Mayenne, France. His parents were Emmanuel Suhard and Jeanne Marsollier. He began his studies at a minor seminary in October 1888. Later, he moved to a major seminary in Laval in 1892.

He then traveled to Rome to study at the Pontifical French Seminary and the Pontifical Gregorian University. He earned high grades and received a gold medal. He also earned advanced degrees in philosophy, theology, and Church law. He became a priest on 18 December 1897. He finished his studies in 1899.

Priestly Work

After returning from Rome in June 1899, Suhard became a professor of philosophy. He taught at the Grand Seminary of Laval starting in September of that year. In 1912, he began teaching theology. He was made the seminary's vice-rector in 1917. By 1919, he became a special canon of Laval's cathedral.

Becoming a Bishop and Cardinal

On 6 July 1928, Pope Pius XI chose Suhard to be the Bishop of Bayeux-Lisieux. He officially became a bishop on 3 October of that year.

Pope Pius XI later appointed Suhard as the Archbishop of Reims on 23 December 1930. He then made him a Cardinal on 16 December 1935. As a Cardinal, Suhard helped choose the next Pope in 1939. That election chose Pope Pius XII. Pope Pius XII then named Suhard the Archbishop of Paris on 11 May 1940.

During World War II, Cardinal Suhard was briefly held by German forces at his home in Paris in June 1940. He later sent a message to Adolf Hitler in October 1941, asking for help to save people who were being held captive. Like many French clergy at the time, he initially supported the government in power during the war. He led some important services at Notre-Dame de Paris during this time. In July 1942, when Jewish people in Paris were being deported, he spoke up for justice and kindness.

From 1945 to 1948, he was the leader of the Assembly of Cardinals and Archbishops of France. This meant he was the main spokesperson for the Catholic Church in France. After that, he served as the vice-president until 1949.

Later Life and Legacy

Cardinal Suhard passed away in Paris at the age of 75. He was buried in the crypt of the archbishops in Notre-Dame Cathedral on 8 June 1949.

Charles de Gaulle, a famous French leader, was not pleased with some of Suhard's actions during the war. When de Gaulle returned to Paris in August 1944, he did not meet with Suhard.

Cardinal Suhard was very important in starting the Territorial Prelature of the Mission of France and the worker-priest movement. These movements aimed to make the Church more connected to ordinary people and their daily lives.

A famous quote attributed to him is: "To be a witness does not consist in engaging in propaganda, nor even in stirring people up, but in being a living mystery. It means to live in such a way that one's life would not make sense if God did not exist."

Another quote often linked to him is: "One of the priest's first services to the world is to tell the truth."
