Alketas ("Alkis") Panagoulias (Αλκέτας Παναγούλιας) was a famous Greek association football player and coach. He was born on May 30, 1934, and passed away on June 18, 2012.
Alketas Panagoulias is well-known for coaching the national football teams of both Greece and the United States. He also managed several important clubs. These included Aris, the team from his hometown, and Olympiacos. With Olympiacos, he helped them win three top Greek championships.

Early Life and Playing Career
Alketas Panagoulias was born in Thessaloniki, Greece, on May 30, 1934. He started his football journey as a player for Aris Thessaloniki F.C. in his hometown. He played for Aris from 1951 to 1962. Later, he played for the Greek American AA team in the United States from 1962 to 1967.
Coaching Career Highlights
After his playing days, Alketas Panagoulias moved to the United States. He studied at the University of New York City. While there, he began his coaching career.
Coaching in the United States
In the U.S., he coached the Greek American Atlas team. He led them to win the National Challenge Cup three times in a row. These wins happened in 1967, 1968, and 1969.
He later returned to the U.S. to coach the U.S. men's national soccer team. This was from 1983 to 1985. He also coached the United States Olympic Soccer team. They played in the 1984 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles.
Coaching the Greek National Team
In 1972, Alketas Panagoulias went back to Athens, Greece. He became the assistant coach for the Greece national football team. The next year, in 1973, he became the head coach.
He coached the Greek team from 1973 to 1981. During this time, he led Greece to their first-ever appearance in a major tournament. This was the Euro 1980 championship in Italy. Greece did not qualify for the Euro tournament again until 2004, when they famously won it.
He returned to coach the Greek National Football team again in 1992. He led the team to their first appearance in a World Cup in 1994. Even though he was very popular, the team's performance in the World Cup was not good. This led to a lot of criticism.
Coaching Greek Clubs
Between his times with the national teams, Panagoulias coached several top Greek clubs. He coached Olympiacos from 1981 to 1983. He helped them win the Greek championship title in both 1982 and 1983.
He returned to Olympiacos again from 1985 to 1987. He earned another championship title with them in 1987. He also coached Aris FC from 1987 to 1990. Later, he coached Levadiakos from 1991 to 1992. His last club coaching jobs were with Iraklis FC in 1997 and Aris FC from 1998 to 1999.
Life After Coaching
After retiring from coaching, Alketas Panagoulias took on other important roles. In 2002, he served as the President of Aris Thessaloniki F.C..
During the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, he helped manage the soccer events. His life story was published in a book in Greece in 2007.
He was also involved in politics. He was elected as a member of the city council in Thessaloniki. He was also a candidate for the Greek Parliament and the European Parliament.
Panagoulias was a FIFA instructor. He was also a member of the U.S. Soccer Federation Hall of Fame.
In 2014, a street next to the Kleanthis Vikelidis Stadium, Aris FC's home, was named after him. This was decided by the City Council of Thessaloniki.
