What is the Hellenic Parliament?
The Hellenic Parliament is the national parliament of Greece. It is where laws are discussed and made for the country. The Parliament works to make sure the government serves the people.
It is a unicameral legislature. This means it has only one main group of members. Some countries have two groups, but Greece has just one.
Members of Parliament
There are 300 members in the Hellenic Parliament. They are called Members of Parliament, or MPs for short. These MPs are chosen by the people of Greece in elections.
Once elected, MPs serve for a term of up to four years. Their main role is to represent the people who voted for them. They bring up important issues and vote on new laws.
Who Leads the Parliament?
The main leader of the Hellenic Parliament is called the Speaker. The Speaker is chosen by the MPs themselves. Their job is to make sure meetings run smoothly.
The Speaker also helps to keep order during debates. They ensure that all MPs follow the rules of the Parliament.
How Elections Work
Elections for the Hellenic Parliament happen regularly. The last election was on July 7, 2019. The next one is expected on or before July 2023.
Greece uses a special voting system. It's a mix of different ways to count votes. This system helps make sure that smaller parties can also get seats. It also gives a bonus to the party that wins the most votes. This helps form a stable government.
Political Parties in Parliament
Inside the Parliament, MPs belong to different political groups or parties. The party with the most MPs usually forms the government. The second-largest party becomes the official opposition.
Currently, the New Democracy party has the most seats. They form the government, led by the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The main opposition party is Syriza, led by Alexis Tsipras.
Other parties also have MPs in the Parliament. These include the Movement for Change, the Communist Party, Greek Solution, and MeRA25. Each party represents different ideas and goals for Greece.
Where the Parliament Meets
The Hellenic Parliament meets in the historic Old Royal Palace in Athens. This grand building has been the home of the Parliament for many years. It's a very important landmark in the city.
Inside the building, there is a large hall where all the MPs gather. This is where they hold their sessions and vote on laws.
