Gladys Catherine Horton (born May 30, 1943 or 1944 or 1945 – died January 26, 2011) was an American R&B and pop music singer. She was the main singer and founder of the famous all-girl group, The Marvelettes. Their hit song "Please Mr. Postman" was a very important one. It was the first song to reach No.1 in the US for Motown Records.

Early Life

Gladys Horton was born in Jacksonville, Florida. She grew up in the Detroit area. There are different ideas about her exact birth year. Some say 1943, others 1944, or even 1945.

The Marvelettes and "Please Mr. Postman"

Gladys Horton helped create The Marvelettes. She was known for her strong voice. The group became very popular. Their song "Please Mr. Postman" made history. It was the first time a song from Motown Records reached the top of the charts. This helped Motown become a huge music company.

Later Life and Death

Gladys Horton passed away on January 26, 2011. She died in a Sherman Oaks nursing home. Her death was caused by problems after she had a stroke.
