Early Life and Education

Duncan Jones's Childhood Years

Duncan Jones was born in Bromley, London, England, on May 30, 1971. He is the first child of the legendary musician David Bowie and his first wife, Angela "Angie" Bowie. His father even wrote a song called "Kooks" for him, which appeared on the 1971 album Hunky Dory.

Duncan spent his childhood in different places, including London, Berlin, and Vevey in Switzerland. He was mostly raised by his father and his Scottish nanny, Marion Skene. When his parents divorced in 1980, his father was given custody of him. Duncan, who was eight years old at the time, used to visit his mother during school holidays.

Schooling and Nicknames

When he was 12, Duncan decided he wanted to be called "Joey." He used this nickname for a while, later shortening it to "Joe" as a teenager. He went back to using his birth name, Duncan, when he was about 18. He attended a boarding school in Scotland called Gordonstoun when he was 14.

Duncan also has half-siblings. His half-sister, Alexandria "Lexi" Jones, was born in 2000 to his father and his father's second wife, Iman. He also has another half-sister, Stacia Larranna Celeste Lipka, from his mother's side.

College and Film School

In 1995, Duncan graduated from the College of Wooster with a degree in philosophy. He then started a PhD program at Vanderbilt University but left to study at the London Film School. He finished his studies there in 2001.

Early Work and Directing

Duncan Jones had an early peek into the film world when he visited the set of Labyrinth, a movie his father was filming. He even worked for the Jim Henson Creature Shop afterward, which creates puppets and special effects.

He also worked as a cameraman for some of his father's concerts and events. In 2006, Duncan directed a campaign for the fashion brand French Connection. This advertisement aimed to refresh the brand's image.

Directing Feature Films

Duncan's first major film was Moon, released in 2009. This science fiction movie was a big success. It was nominated for many awards and won two British Independent Film Awards. Duncan also won the BAFTA Award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for Moon.

After Moon, he directed another science fiction thriller called Source Code, which came out in 2011. This film was also well-received by audiences.

In 2016, Duncan directed Warcraft, a movie based on the popular video game series. His next film, Mute, was released in February 2018 on Netflix. He described Mute as a "spiritual sequel" to Moon, meaning it shares similar themes or ideas. The story is set in Berlin in the future and follows a bartender who is mute and looking for his missing girlfriend.

Future Projects

As of July 2025, Duncan Jones has announced that his next project will be a science fiction film based on the 2000 AD Comics character Rogue Trooper. He has mentioned that the script is looking good, and they are getting ready to start casting actors for the movie.
