Duncan Jones (born May 30, 1971) is a British film director, producer, and screenwriter. He is well-known for directing movies like Moon (2009), Source Code (2011), and Warcraft (2016). For his work on Moon, he received a special award called the BAFTA Award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer. Duncan Jones is the son of the famous English singer-songwriter David Bowie.

Early Life and Education
Duncan Jones's Childhood Years
Duncan Jones was born in Bromley, London, England, on May 30, 1971. He is the first child of the legendary musician David Bowie and his first wife, Angela "Angie" Bowie. His father even wrote a song called "Kooks" for him, which appeared on the 1971 album Hunky Dory.
Duncan spent his childhood in different places, including London, Berlin, and Vevey in Switzerland. He was mostly raised by his father and his Scottish nanny, Marion Skene. When his parents divorced in 1980, his father was given custody of him. Duncan, who was eight years old at the time, used to visit his mother during school holidays.
Schooling and Nicknames
When he was 12, Duncan decided he wanted to be called "Joey." He used this nickname for a while, later shortening it to "Joe" as a teenager. He went back to using his birth name, Duncan, when he was about 18. He attended a boarding school in Scotland called Gordonstoun when he was 14.
Duncan also has half-siblings. His half-sister, Alexandria "Lexi" Jones, was born in 2000 to his father and his father's second wife, Iman. He also has another half-sister, Stacia Larranna Celeste Lipka, from his mother's side.
College and Film School
In 1995, Duncan graduated from the College of Wooster with a degree in philosophy. He then started a PhD program at Vanderbilt University but left to study at the London Film School. He finished his studies there in 2001.
Filmmaking Career
Early Work and Directing
Duncan Jones had an early peek into the film world when he visited the set of Labyrinth, a movie his father was filming. He even worked for the Jim Henson Creature Shop afterward, which creates puppets and special effects.
He also worked as a cameraman for some of his father's concerts and events. In 2006, Duncan directed a campaign for the fashion brand French Connection. This advertisement aimed to refresh the brand's image.
Directing Feature Films
Duncan's first major film was Moon, released in 2009. This science fiction movie was a big success. It was nominated for many awards and won two British Independent Film Awards. Duncan also won the BAFTA Award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for Moon.
After Moon, he directed another science fiction thriller called Source Code, which came out in 2011. This film was also well-received by audiences.
In 2016, Duncan directed Warcraft, a movie based on the popular video game series. His next film, Mute, was released in February 2018 on Netflix. He described Mute as a "spiritual sequel" to Moon, meaning it shares similar themes or ideas. The story is set in Berlin in the future and follows a bartender who is mute and looking for his missing girlfriend.
Future Projects
As of July 2025, Duncan Jones has announced that his next project will be a science fiction film based on the 2000 AD Comics character Rogue Trooper. He has mentioned that the script is looking good, and they are getting ready to start casting actors for the movie.
Personal Life
Duncan Jones got engaged to photographer Rodene Ronquillo on June 28, 2012. They got married on November 6, 2012. On the same day, Rodene was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since then, they have worked to raise awareness about the disease and the importance of early diagnosis.
Duncan and Rodene have two children. Their son, Stenton David Jones, was born on July 10, 2016. Their daughter was born on April 18, 2018, and Duncan named her Zowie, which was his own childhood nickname.
