Important Events of 1376

Peace and Politics in England and France

  • In March, a peace agreement between England and France was extended. It would last until April of 1377.
  • On April 28, the "Good Parliament" began in England. It was called "Good" because its members tried to fix problems in the King's Royal Council. This council was a group of advisors to the king.
  • On June 7, Prince Edward, who was very ill, called his father King Edward III and his brother John of Gaunt. He made them promise that his son, Richard, would become the next king.
  • On June 8, Edward, the Black Prince died. He was the first English Prince of Wales who did not become king.
  • On July 10, the Good Parliament ended. It had been the longest Parliament ever held in England at that time.
  • In the autumn, John of Gaunt, using his power in the Royal Council, undid many of the changes made by the Good Parliament.
  • On December 25, John of Gaunt introduced his nephew, Prince Richard of Bordeaux, to the important leaders of the country. He made them promise to support Richard's right to become king after Edward III.

Changes in Other Empires

  • On August 12, Andronicus IV Palaeologus, a co-emperor of the Byzantine Empire, invaded Constantinople. He did this with help from the Genoese. He removed his father, John V Palaeologus, from power and took him prisoner.
  • Khan Qamar al-din of Mongolistan tried to invade Timur’s eastern area of Farghana, but he was not successful.
  • Timur led his army against troops from the White Horde near Sighnaq. However, winter arrived, stopping a battle from happening right away.
  • Dmitri Donskoi of Moscow raided Volga Bulgaria, an area in what is now Russia that was ruled by Mongols.
  • Acamapichtli was chosen as the new leader, or Tlatoani, of the Aztec empire. This happened after the death of Tenoch, who was the first Aztec ruler.

Religious and Royal Changes

  • In September, John of Gaunt asked the religious reformer John Wycliffe to appear before the Royal Council. Wycliffe was there to defend Gaunt from bishops who had become his enemies.
  • Catherine of Siena visited Pope Gregory XI in Avignon. She tried to convince him to make peace with Florence and to move the Papacy (the Pope's office) back to Rome.
  • Olaf III became King of Denmark. This happened after his grandfather, Valdemar IV, died in 1375.
  • The city of Sredets in Bulgaria was renamed Sofia. It was named after the Church of St Sophia in the city.
  • Nasir-ad-Din Shaban II, the Mamluk Sultan of Egypt, was replaced by Alah-ad-Din Ali.
  • Qutbuddin became Sultan of Kashmir after his brother, Shahabuddin, died.
